T6.1 Ocean 150
I am about to buy a 2023 T6.1 Ocean with another 6 months on manufacturs warranty. I would appreciate some guidance on this

  1. Does the used car warranty start after the end of the manufacturer's warranty, they seem to want it concurrent for the 6 months?
  2. The used warranty does not appear to be a warranty at all, more akin to an insurance policy?
  3. They are unable to produce me a list of parts covered in manufacturers vs used, why?
  4. There are caveats e.g. modifications to the vehicle invalidate used warranty!
  5. You have to have an inspection report which they then determine whether it is under warranty, if not you have to pay for this, usually about £150. This seems grossly unfair?
  6. Which leads me to the question are they worth it?

Is this from a VW Dealer? And how much are they asking for the van?

That seems like an awful lot of very unfair conditions for what is actually their warranty, not yours and if they have questions regarding the vehicle then they should be identifying and answering these prior to sale. If they are talking about the inspection report if you report a fault then again, id say not standard practise.

It running concurrently is pretty standard, however not being able to supply what is actually covered is not.

As asked already, is this from VW or independent seller? If it was me id be walking away, unless it’s a very good price. Saying that you do have the last few months of VW warranty.

This is standard practice with most Warranties, even the VW new car warranty, but they call it a Diagnostic Charge. If the fault is deemed a Warranty failure then no charge is made and the repair made.
If it is Not a Warranty Claim and you elect to do the repair elsewhere then you are charged. If you decide to have the repair done by the garage then the Diagnostic/Inspection charge is part of the repair cost and may or may not be charged separately.
Standard practice in my experience.. After all the garage has spent time and money diagnosing the actual fault .

If I understand correctly you still have 6 months left of the VW manufacturers warranty which is 3 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, and the dealer wants to sell you a third party used car warranty to run concurrently for the remaining 6 months.
That is shocking.
VW do an All in Plan for vehicles 3 to 6 years old. It runs for 2 years and you get 2 services, 2 years warranty, 2 Mot’s, and 2 years roadside assistance. The cover is cheap in the first place and several times a year, eg around Black Friday, is even cheaper.
If you had this plan to cover you from years 3 to 5, you could take it out again for years 5 to 7. There is no inspection involved if there is a VW service history.
Some people say there are exceptions to the warranty. Possibly so. All I can say is I recently had the bunk bed hinges and fridge catch replaced under the All-in with no quibbles.
Ask the dealer what he is playing at

Response from dealer

1. No it starts after manufacturers warranty. The two types of warranty are from different parts of the business, used warranty is from the finance division
2. They agree
3. Still not able, on a case by case basis
4. External mods are ok
5. This is industry practise and most manufacturers do this
6. Kind of worth it

HOWEVER, the big shocker is that when your manufacturers warranty runs out and you go for the all in package which incliudes warranty, this is used car warranty and not extending your manufacturers warranty.

I knew that non warranty might charge that but didnt realise warranty generally do that. I must have been lucky with previous warranties.

You are a little bit ‘over a barrel’ with VW, however in the grand scheme of things it does represent value for money. I have had a couple of claims that would have otherwise cost me a total of £4k plus ……..

I must confess that Volkswagens insistence on ‘checking warranty eligibility’ is a stress we could all do without and at times drives me to distraction but hey ho, prob the same elsewhere.

Take the van now, buy new All in at 3 years old BUT pay for it monthly….. you can then cancel at any time, and at 6 years this means you can extend to 8 (which is what I will do if I don’t sell the van this Spring).

My advice would be to take VW's All-In warranty. It's good value for money and has pretty cover [except, as I've recently found out, water ingress!].

I've the All-In several times and would recommend it as it provides a 2 years warranty, 2x services, 2x MOT, plus 2 years roadside assistance. Details available here: https://customer.vwfs.co.uk/service-plans/VWCV.html
I didnt realise I could add this to my recent new van (23 plate). The bonus is I went on to find out price and it turns out the van already has the service plan, im now waiting on a call back to see if they will transfer it to me and what plan it has.

Yes it gets a bit complicated.
At my last service the service and Mot were paid for by VW Finance, who administer the All -in.
The DSG oil change was paid for by me as not included in the service.
The warranty work was submitted for approval to the warranty department, which from memory is based in Warrington, and I assume they pay the dealer for the work.

I have to say that I find it all confusing

Should be transferable, mine was when I bought from somebody else on this forum

So do I, it appears that there is now three types of warranty Manufacturers, extended warranty, used car warranty. The socond one has been outsourced to someone who was very rude over the phone (clearly does not like their job).

The plan goes with the van not the owner, Vw are very good at "forgetting" about it so they can charge you for something that has already been paid for.

No need for confusion, just take the All In direct from VW when the existing warranty expires. Search on the forum and you will see that most people do precisely that. I see that you are looking at a few vans and it can get overwhelming………… but if you’re going to buy a VW reduce the worry and just buy the warranty ……. It will give you peace of mind and will be about the best you can hope for.

The All in One plan is very good value when you compare it with the price of two services, MoT and Breakdown Cover. I think that the services alone would cost the same, unless you go to an independent. My dealer told me about it when I was looking to renew the warranty. They sometimes have a Black Friday deal and I thought there was one in March / April time. I think with cars so complex now you need a warranty.

The strange thing about all this is the manufacturer's warranty which you can extend to cover years 4 and 5, but you have to take it out in the first 6 months of ownership. This at least was the case with my 2019 Ocean. Is it still ? Very odd indeed (you would think if you had to take it out early it would be 3-6 months before the initial 3 year warranty expires. Obviously done this way to catch you out and nobody tells you about it (unless you read this forum). Not a word from the dealer or VW via post or phone.

The years 4 and 5 manufacturer's coverage has certainly saved me a pretty penny and although it is not as good, I have just taken out the "All in" for years 6 and 7 as it is as good, if not better than anything else out there. They have even confirmed that they will allow my services to go beyond the normal period for the service aspect of the plan as they are every 2 years (long-life). Think it amounted to an extension of about a year.

Aftermarket “warranties” are an insurance product. Just like pet cover.
I haven’t needed the VW used warranty on our Golf, but once you look at the list of exclusions on others they don’t exactly fill one with confidence.
My daughter took out RAC cover on her car and the exclusions were ridiculous. As it’s a Suzuki, didn’t need them.

My son bought a VW Golf last summer with Approved Used VW 12mth warranty. Car started losing water after 4 months, booked it in with VW, traced leak to water pump (common fault on mk7 golf). As the car was coming up to 10 years old they asked if we wanted cambelt doing at the same time ( it had never been done) and made complete sense. We paid £270 for the cambelt kit whilst VW paid for water pump and labour etc. Very pleased with how it all worked out and glad we went down the VW Approved Used route.

You can apply for the All in one plan up to the vehicle’s six year which means if you take out cover just before the sixth year you will be covered for breakdown and warranty up to your vehicle’s eighth year. For many if you have extended the warranty until year 5 then take out the All in one plan means you will only have cover up to the seventh year.
This was my position but my dealer told me to cancel down the plan before the sixth year and then set up a new one hence covered up to the eighth year.
I phoned VW a few days before my cars sixth birthday and even though I had used both services and an MoT they cancelled the plan down without any extra charge to me but I lost a few months breakdown cover and warranty cover. I guess if I was only half way though and had used up the services then I might have had to pay to cancel down the plan. I then went online and set up a new plan.

Sorry I wasn’t clear, we have had to use vw warranty in the past with no issues. Have had 50% paid by vw out of warranty as good will a couple of times too.
VW, like others, can be a bit tight, but the warranty looked far far better than an aftermarket one.

I have just bought an Ocean and collect it on Friday, they have given me 6 months VW warranty but did warn me if I want to extend it, I have to do it before the end of the first 6 months of ownership. At least they warned me. I’ll look out for a deal over the next few months before the end of the 6 months.

Are you purchasing from a VW dealer? I don't it's correct that you have to purchase VW's All In plan within 6 months or purchasing the vehicle. Check the details on their website. You can put in the vehicle reg. and it should give options that are available.
