Downside of going for a 3.88T Grand California?

In the end I have ordered the 3.5t, decided it would keep things simple and should work for us (2 adults, small dog). We didn’t need the roof bed or tow bar so think we should be OK. Time to enjoy my Ocean for the next 7 months while I wait for the Grand!

My GC 2022
  • I added a spare Wheel: 20–27 kg
  • Underslung Kit including jack: 8–11 kg
  • 1x Gaslight Bottle: 16.2–16.5 kg
  • 1x EcoFlow Delta 2: 12 kg
  • Me and my Wife: 140 kg
  • Two Staffies: 30 kg
  • Cooking Set, bathroom and bedding stuff etc.: 12 kg
  • Combined Total:
    • Low end: 20 + 8 + 16.2 + 12 + 140 + 30 + 12 = 238.2 kg (525.2 lbs)
    • High end: 27 + 11 + 16.5 + 12 + 140 + 30 + 12 = 248.5 kg (547.7 lbs)
    • Range: 238.2–248.5 kg (525.2–547.7 lbs)
  • Curb Weight: 3,000–3,021 kg (6,636–6,660 lbs) for the 3.5t configuration.
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Limit: 3,500 kg
  • Total Vehicle Weight:
    • Low end: 3,000 kg (curb) + 238.2 kg (added) = 3,238.2 kg (7,141.2 lbs).
    • High end: 3,021 kg (curb) + 248.5 kg (added) = 3,269.5 kg (7,207.7 lbs).
    • Range: 3,238.2–3,269.5 kg (7,141.2–7,207.7 lbs).
I am well within the 3,500 kg limit, with sufficient capacity for additional items (e.g., food, water, or camping gear).
I have to monitor additional cargo (e.g., full water tanks, ~100 kg if 100 liters) and full diesel tank to stay within limits.

Thanks useful, I think we will be fine, have to be ordered it now!
We only have one dog now, our Scottie is about 12kg. Unfortunately I am probably 90kg, but TBH could do with losing 10!

The knock on issues of the 3.88 tonne gross mass
We would like to loan our van to our boys. For them and their partners to enjoy a touring trip. They don’t have Grandfather rights to the C1.
What route is easiest and the approx cost to gain this additional classification?
Any advice or recommendations for providers would be good also.

Tell them to join the TA and get the MoD to pay for a weeks intensive LGV C qualification.
Worked for me 30 years ago!
