1 Bottle or 2

Hi ,do you guys carry 2 907 gas bottles when travelling? its just I can’t see how you would manage the gas effectively without the use of 2 bottle.
I also have a gas BBQ on board that uses the same gas bottle, so effectively always have a spare.

Our gas ran out on our last trip... and we were in the NZ back country - so glad we had a backup backpacking gas stove - it just lasted the two days there until we got back to a town and filled up at a petrol station. How are prices in the UK? Here it was about NZ$11.00 (5.5GBP) Cheers Cliff

The prices here are shocking  Near £40

are you able to fill in butane at a petrol station in NZ?

Out here the prices are exorbitant - anywhere from 30+ when exchanged for an empty cylinder.
Hi - Yes, most petrol stations have a gas filling facility and it cost about NZ$11 (or halve that for GBP).
Cheers Cliff

We also have petrol stations with gas, but it is propane. are you sure you are filling in butane or propane?

This year we took a spare for the first time and didn’t need it. Mainly we cook outside in our Awning room using single gas canisters. In the 3 weeks we were away we used 6 canisters for all our meals. We mainly stay on ACSI sites which have electricity included and certainly would have used more if not connected to mains electricity.
In 7 years we have only had 2 907 gas refills but we had Covid in that where we didn’t go on long holidays.

We’ve covered 10,000 miles with around 70 nights camping in our first year and only recently had to change the bottle. We do go to the pub or have a fish supper if we’re at Keswick, Whitby etc. Bottle a year isn’t bad ? I wouldn’t like to lug a spare bottle around on the off chance that we run out, not in UK anyway.

I really don’t think that gas use can be measured in days or months….. it’s a simple law of physics……… use the gas and it will run out one day……

We do use a lot of gas, but then we use it every time we go away….. for all meals at all times and kettle use on top of that. We did carry a spare around Ireland for 4 weeks and also around France for 4 weeks however in each case we discovered that we had used just over half a cylinder (just weigh the cylinder with an accurate scale). Unless we go away for more than 6 weeks at a time we won’t bother to carry a spare in the future.

At this point I will confess to feeling quite smug at having established a safe and practical method of filling the 907’s myself so all I need to do is top up and set off in the knowledge that I start with a full cylinder….. and its less than one quarter of the price of a cylinder swap :thumb

Tricky business?
Not for me……. However……. Whilst it is possible I have to say that I can not recommend or advocate what you may read in the following thread. I take NO RESPONSIBILITY for anyone else!

907 bottle will last around 50days if you cook each night and make around 4cuppas a day.
Again only a guild as depends on what you cook.

We just got our 3rd bottle in 13 years. I make coffee on it, and usually cook on camping stove outside in the sun unless it’s binning it down!
Just 1 bottle for us.
