4Motion drive train - high and low ratio?

I currently drive a 2009 VW Touareg and this has high and low ratios in the 4WD.
Just wondering if the California (VW van) has the same, or just a single ratio box.

We have had some tracks in the Pyrenees last summer where we would have loved to be able to go slower than we could. Not necessarily because they were steep, but because so much was washed out, there remained deep gulleys and big rocks, that required some very cautious driving, both up and down.
Also, we feel the reverse is just too high, higher than first gear.

Seikel do low gear, but also fixed, not switcheable.

Yes I agree about reverse.
Really bad floods in Pyrenees a few years ago ruined a lot of the roads. Cauterets where we had a house was cut off for nearly two months while they carved a new road out if the mountainside.
