Hi, had my Cali from new since November 2011, sadly decided not to get the optional cruise control and now regret it. Spoke to the dealer who says because its a new cali model an aftermarket cruise control is not available for it yet. Does anyone have any ideas or know different please?? :boohoo

Hi I might be wrong but I thought if you had electric windows it could be retro fitted
By vw for about £200. Prehaps Alex from smg could verify this for you :thumb

It's not as easy on the T5 but the T5.1 can be done for approx £300 plus vat. Speak to Dave at. Vanworx in Portland.

and there was me thinking the T6 was still under wraps in R&D :rofl
trouble with being a Vanorak is you see wrong stuff all the time..and when you add in English teacher (ex) constantly spotting the spilling irrors you see on signs (especially in house things)
you get to grumpy old man stage very fast

We have done it on the pre-facelift T5's, not tried a new one bt not sure if we can. I have seen a customers facelift T5 that had aftermarket cruise control fitted to it.

cheers

Hi Tommo,

I am in the same boat as you, I also own a 2011 model and regret not having had cruise control fitted from new. I also was told by my VW supplier that it was not possible to retrofit CControl but suspect that the person I was talking to had a lack of knowledge or didn't want to know especially having read the posts in thread.
Did you get any further? If so what price, who by and will it affect your warranty?

Thanks

Dave

VW Van Centres can retro fit a VW approved cruise control system.
The unit is warranted for 2 years by VW. Cost is £395 + vat (fitted) and should need about 3-4 hours in the workshop. Although the wiring harness is for left hand drive - it is compatible, except for one wire - which has to be replaced with a longer one. There was a delay on fitting mine as a code had to be obtained from VW Germany - this allows the electronics to recognise that the unit is there! The speed setting, on/off and warning symbol all display - as if factory fitted.
Mine was fitted by Listers Van Centre Coventry - contact Phil in service dept.

Thanks for the info. I will now go to my local (Newcastle) depot well armed.

Perhaps I can add to this debate -

Cruise Control is somewhat my bag, I've fitted well into three figures on various A5 platform cars (Octavia, LEON, Golf 5, A3) and some others so I decided to take a look at this before I bought my Cali as for me it was essential and one of the vans we were considering didn't have it.

My conclusion was sort of as above, there is a kit which is tagged on the parts system as LHD only and priced at < £100. This is possibly due to a wire needing to run to the ECU which again would tie in with the comment of extending one wire made above.

The slight fly in the ointment is the BCM (Body Control Module) which is what would have previously been the Central Electronics Controller and Convenience Controller all rolled into one. If you don't have the correct one fitted then the instructions suggest this needs to be replaced. Now I don't yet have the Cali to have a proper look myself but also in the description for the BCM it mentions carrier frequencies for keys so it would probably mean you'd need to have the keys matched to the van.

Key matching is in two stages, firstly the 'chip' in the key is matched to the Immobiliser which is normally housed in the dash insert (Speedo Clocks), the second is to match the central locking function of the key transmitter to the vehicle. These days, without specialist and expensive extraction equipment, the Immo can only be done by VW using the GEKO online system with the link to VW's server however I'm reasonably confident the central locking can be done yourself.

I think if you replaced the BCM the Immo would remain unchanged but the central locking would need to be matched.

The info above of course relates to the facelift, I didn't look at earlier models yet.

Don't be disheartened if your dealer says it can't be done. In my experience dealers will turn away jobs they have no experience of in case they go wrong or take longer than expected. They can make enough money without the hassle.

I hope this helps some of you.

I am in exactly the same position except I was told that VW would not provide the code to the dealers! My dealer said they retro-fitted one but when it came to obtaining the code, VW would not supply this to them (this is a big dealer) - they panicked a litlle as they had the thing fitted but not working, they finally found a third party company to complete the work. Wow!
Coventry is a little too far for me as I am in West Sussex - any other ideas?

I've been doing more research on this and I'm certain there is not an issue with the keys.

The first thing to do would be to ascertain if you have the correct BCM or not.

The coding is quite simple, I have the tool to do that.

If you're willing to take a trip across the border I'll take a look for you.

Same for us, cannot get code or any further information from VW to fit and code it

cheers

What can't you get Alex?? Controller coding?

The Engine (01) would be either long coding and add Cruise Control or by Login (11) using the code 11463. Pretty sure the facelift models will all be long coding.

As the FL Cali doesn't have a separate Steering Controller (16), the functions of (16) are located as a sub controller in the BCM (09)

BCM (09) will be long coding. I don't have the actual Bit/Byte but I can find out easily enough for you when I get home.

The only lottery is which BCM is fitted and I have a list of suitable ones. I guess you can use the chassis and FI suggestion but the most surefire way is to use VAS to read the part number.

VW won't give us codes for items that are not available in the UK. As it is a LHD kit, they will not supply us the codes needed. I imagine that it will be to do with Type Approval.

cheers

I understand they will not tell you how to do it if it is not a UK accessory however so long as your guys know what the coding is then it doesn't really matter, and I've just told you that :D .

I don't think it's Type Approval as the Cali is sold in the UK with CC fitted from the factory so the vehicle is Type Approved. I'm sure it's just a foible in the VW parts system where it's not been made available for RHD. I used to have the same problem with Skoda Fabia and Skoda Octavia.

Whether or not it is type approval for accessories or not? We can certainly have a go with the coding you have supplied

:thanks

Found this don't know if it helps as I'm not technical
VAG-COM Activation Procedure;
Activating Cruise Control via ECU: [Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Login - 11]
Enter 11463 to activate cruise control [Do It!]

Yep that's as I said above, it's the normal code for TDi's such as the older 1.9, 2.0 PD's and probably to 2.5 as well as older petrol engines. Most newer ones will use Long Coding now.

In newer cars it also requires the Steering Wheel controller to be coded for Cruise Control.

Alex if you need me to help with the Bit/Byte for the BCM and ECU let me know.

Although I have factory cruise control fitted :p , I'm really finding these posts fascinating....I know I'm a :sad sad :censor who must have far too much time on his hands :thumb

Yep, that's exactly what I was going to say Stu! ;) :laugh2
