Camping in winter

Sorry its me. The cali-cap is the same as the mutze cap I was referring to the cali-top :thumb
That has 3 panels :thumb

This is the Cali Top ( Cali Dry ) It has dual use and can be used either inside or outside of the scissor mechanism.

Thanks Martin, but is anyone using a Cali-Cap?

I have yet to try out my home-made Pucer-style screen (made with foil-backed insulating bubble-wrap and about a mile of duck tape - difficult to tape an 8-metre long wrap-around thing in a straight line when you live in a small flat!).

I'll post some pictures once I've tried it. But clearly I'm already doubting its efficiency in asking about the Cali-Cap!

the pucer makes the upstairs quieter and darker (which I like), but you lose the windows, though that suits me fine.

I have had no trouble with the pucer. It rolls up when you store it, but is essentially semi rigid once installed on the van. and I have never experienced any flapping as it is tailored to the bellows as per the photo.

Another benefit is that if it gets soaked, you can dry it relatively easily by wiping it down as the bulk of it does not absorb water - only the canvas edges do. I hate damp things in the van

It's a different strokes, different folks scenario. As ever, it might be worth going to a meeting so you can see a few options before opening your wallet. Biggest drawback is its size when rolled up.
How big is it when rolled up and were do you store yours when traveling? I like the idea of the dark area and can understand the insulation and cooling features especially when it's hot!

Cali dry looks interesting, i am thinking it is similar to the iso-top? How much will it cost?

I will try and find out for you colin :thumb

I like your little wrap around awning thing...what is it?

How did you blacken your Pucer cover? What screen cover do you use and did you use the same method to blacken. I spoke with Daren last week and hope to meet with him in a couple of weeks to collect my Pucer.

darren did the top for me .windscreen was done by local trimmer .i use taylor made front screen .the front will pull down

I purchased a topper from comfortz leisure for my cali beach fits perfect in only a few minutes by one person[it is a different size than the se ]give great insulation and completely weatherproof and great service and advice :D

Can anybody say whether the Pucer is warmer than the Vanarak?
It looks to cover the vent panels at the top....

The Pucer covers don't hide the vents - the top section at the front (a slightly odd design with a flap at the top) hangs down a bit so the vents are still useable.

Brilliant things that keep put ALL weather.

Not quite winter related but we just had a power cut; even the local mobile phone mats went down.
So straight out to the Cali to make a brew and stick the fridge on just in case!

Hi MAUI2512,

what is the brand/model of your awning side wall? looks great.

I am looking to buy a pucer as it looks the most suitable to me: easy to install, good insulation and fairly cheap. Anyone has a good website to order it? I struggle to find it.

thanks,
Dom

Back in 2012 we went snowboarding in Alpe D'Huez, the first night it went down to -20! We were fine, we had a topper on, and left the heating on constant, on 1, for the whole time we were there. The only time we turned it up was when we'd finished boarding and turned it up to max, to dry our clothes out whilst we went to dinner. Over 4 nights, and including the fuel from Grenoble and back again, we used only ÂŁ28 of fuel for the heater.

Hi Dom
I just commented on someone else's photo...I don't have one I'm afraid, but do think it looks good!

Hi everybody
I've seen some photographs of a "Cali Dry", I'd like to know something more about it.

:thanks

Not tried it in true winter yet but our Mutz has been fantastic, even in the horizontal rain, cold and gales we experienced in Grassington in May. It dries very quickly and packs up small enough to fit in the tailgate with the chairs. I like the fact that the windows mean we don't lose precious light.
It looks smart and generated quite a bit of interest this weekend in Bowness on Windermere.
We always sleep up top and have always been toasty and dry.

Thanks Zizzy for the info.
where did you buy it?
How difficult is it to put it and remove it? I have roof bars and was planing to buy one with baretop, i am just worried about the difficulty to put it and remove it with a non-automatic roof top mechanic.

I am still not sure if the mutze type is better than the pucer type for winter in terms of heat ? anyone has experience in both?

thanks for tips,
Dom

This may help with the desicion making, here is us fitting a Cali-Topper at the Northampton meet earlier in the year. The roofless variant is the same apart from it wraps around rather than being pulled over the Top.

I'll have some samples of the Std Cali-Topper at this weekends meeting if anyone would like to take a look before making a desicion.

The Beach roof is a different size to the standard Cali roof so just double check before purchasing any roof cover/ protector :thumb

Cheers
Nick
