So what's the general consensus when opening and closing the roof, engine running or just ignition on ??

Just ignition on. Open both side windows. Be very carefull by closing the roof. Double check that nothing is left in the roof above. Check that the canvas is folding inwards correctly. Especially in windy conditions to avoid a damage at the roof!

Check out what the first thing is that needs to be done before operating the roof....exact on 1min playtime
It is a Dutch video

I know what you're saying HC, but at 1.10 secs, after she has apparently started the engine, look at the Control Panel display. That's the display you get with the engine ignition On, but without the engine running.

I've got into the habit of running the engine because then I remember to turn it off! I kept forgetting to turn the ignition off previously :(

The movie is shot inside the showroom , guess they would not gas themselves.
It is "best " to have the engine running operating the roof
It is " best " to open a door when lowering the roof
It is "best" to have the aux. heater not running for a short periode
It is "best "to open the zipper from the tailgate with two hands , one hand opening the zipper one hand supporting the bag....
It is "best" to open the door when swiveling the front seats
It is best.....

Could go on a while

I agree with much of what you say. In fact many of your points are mentioned in the Handbook, but not " having the engine running when putting the roof up or down ".
It also states in the Handbook to put the Handbrake On / Parking Brake On when Parked not just leaving the DSG in "P".
On this we will have to differ. I just maintain it is not necessary, as VW do not specifically mention it, but if you want to then fine. No harm will come from either method.
See you at Lower Lode .:thumb

I reckon it's just a safety feature rather than a power thing, having to have a key in the ignition and having the ignition on is going to stop my 8 year old lowering the roof whilst his little brother is up top. So on that basis IMO the engine does not need to be running.
