After seeing a friend use one, I have bought an EML 327 OBD11 interface device which plugs directly into the diagnostics port on my VW, or any other vehicle with a port. very cheap on ebay:

All you need to interrogate the unit is an app for you phone, I use Torque Pro, there is a free version but the Pro version is very cheap and does more.

or if Android

For around £15 you can investigate your own fault codes, and clear them if required, obviously after correcting the problem.

Brilliant little tool for not very much money, I have had no reason to use it on my VW but it identified an exhaust sensor issue on my wife's Honda.

Its fine for simple code reading but not more than that, for more precise diagnostics and code setting you would need a VCDS from ross-tech, I have both and each have their own uses...

I also have both bt device & VCDS & agree with Loz.
There is a thread on various apps to use with bt device.

Had not seen the previous thread, thought it may be of interest.

It's also good for clearing fault codes without having to go to a dealer.
