Her last few weeks camping....

Thoughts are with you.

We lost Poppy at only 8 (she was our first) in Dec 2017 after bone cancer, keeping her comfortable as long as we could but could not camp with her in that time in case of spontaneous fracture. I can testify to the power of CBD for pain management - it made a huge difference to her quality of life vs opiates in those precious last months.

They're such a joy especially when camping and forming a new pack for the weekend, we are getting a new one after Easter; it's finally time but she will never be replaced.

I well remember your posts as Poppy as on her travels to the rainbow bridge. So heart-rending. Yes, another dog comes along, carves it's own special place in the heart, but can never replace the ones that have gone xx

Thank you Matt x

She seems to have discovered a new lease of life now :) Running everywhere, eating everything, getting my hopes up that it may be months and not weeks so having to be careful.
Wonderful, dogs are never happier than in the great outdoors, lovely to read.

Such sad posts and full of caring emotion. Our Whippet, Pip is only 2 years old and I dread the day when I have to confront his demise and my heart goes out to you facing losing your furry companions.

It's hard to lose a friend. We've lost in oktober our Stella, a 9 years old basset hound and still miss her every day. A dog is so much more than an animal... and losing her hurts.
Wishing you lovely and hartfilling memories.
Greetings
Calibusje

Losing a pet is painful at any age, 9 is no age. You must be heartbroken. xx

I live in dread that one day i am going go lose my travelling companion. They come in to our lives as just a dog and then over the years they worm their way into the deepest recesses of our hearts. When the day comes it is important to remember to repay all the years of happiness and companionship with kindness.
Sometimes it can be excruciatingly painful to be kind. Very sorry GJ.

Yes, they come to us when we know that losing them is part of the deal, and when the time comes losing them hurts no matter what .... but I'v got so many memories, had so much love and now still have a little time to give her everything ....

Sorry to hear about your dog - they are so precious.
Enjoy your memories with her.
Kind regards

Greg

Bella on her first day of holiday, taking in all the new smells with her bestest friend Max.

She ran around like a five year old today. So excited, woods, lakes, streams, meadows.... all new smells, lots of new trails.

Poor Jen - you are certainly going through some tough times lately.
Sounds like you have been companions to each other. She must have had a great life with you and your travels together.
I am sure it will be a bitter-sweet trip for you. Best Wishes

Thank you xx

I feel tremendously privileged. She has to go sometime, everything that lives dies. However I have been given advance warning, so I can make sure that this amazing companion of mine can leave with happiness and love and free from the pain and suffering that would creep up slowly had we not known.

Bless her. She will always have a huge special place in our hearts, and "our" because she is mostly my Sister's dog, but then, we share everything. xx

As we promised her, we took Bella to one of her favourite woodland locations today. She loves woods and this is bluebell wood, Nene Country park, a short walk from Ferry Meadows CMC site. She loved the riverside walk along the River Nene,FM6.jpg

Bella and Max decided to do a bit of nature watching today.

Sneaking off into one of the many hides along the banks of the River Nene.

Max, being a seaside dog, thought he had seen a giant white seagull. Bella had to gently tell him it was called a Swan.

Bella is doing very well. We are having to wipe her bottom every time she goes to the Loo to try and prevent infection, but she is still happy, full of life and no obvious pain.

Oh Mart, yes. They are hard to say goodbye to, even when we know we are going to have to sometime.

I feel very privileged I am having these last few weeks with Bella, all my other dogs died very quickly or were too weak and old to really enjoy life in their final days.

If you can have ball-boys then Bella should have been a ball-dog. She can find a ball where no one else can. This can be a disadvantage sometimes: we live next door to tennis courts and sometimes Bella pops round for a bit of "self-service".

Today we took her to another new walk to explore, her 6th new place in six days. Walking along the river her nose went down, head into a pile of tangled weeds, and with that triumphant swagger of her tail out she emerged with a tennis ball in her mouth:D

Betty's forte is losing balls, not finding them.

(This morning... doing what a spaniel's gotta do...)

Really sorry and sad for you. Just keep in mind you had all these wonderful years, and that is the real gift !

Thank you, we have really wonderful memories ... although she is not gone yet, the last 7 days of new smells, new walks, new places to run around has given her a whole new lease of life :)

My wife and I both grew up with dogs in our families. It teaches you so much about love, loyalty, responsibility and companionship. However, it also gives you your first experience of loss, heartbreak and grief.
Somewhere, somehow I developed an allergy to both cats and dogs through adolescence - so have had to give up the idea of having dogs in my own family ( as I don’t enjoy feeling like I permanently have the flu)
As a result my own kids have missed out on all of the above - and I feel badly about that. They really don’t know what they’ve missed

Amazing companions...

Don't feel bad. Loads of kids grow up without knowing a dog's loyalty and love. My daughter in law is terrified of dogs and consequently my grandchildren will grow up without one, although to her eternal credit she has really tried to get on with ours and to some extent her fear is now much less. Both my Grandchildren adore our dogs, always got their arms around them.

However Bella's besets friend, Max, was literally in bad odour three days ago. HE "ate" something  It upset his stomach and was forcibly expelled out at 5am in the morning .... all over my bed

We were in Barcelona for a few days to see a band, and our two have stayed with my Mum whilst we have been away. Poor Rudy seemed very sad apparently and didn't want to go for walks, but being reunited seems to have cheered him back up. Part of the reason we tend to only go on holidays they can come with us. They get as much from us as we do from them. They are family as this picture demonstrates. :)

Hi @GrannyJen. I've only just noted this, equal parts, beautiful and moving thread. My heart goes out to you. What a beautiful dog, and what a wonderful life you've given and are continuing to give her.

Much Love x

We have a vet coming on Thursday, a vet who specialises in stress free, caring euthenasia at home. 6 weeks ago the vet suggested that we had 6 to 8 weeks with her. The tumour has burst her anal glands and infection is a big risk.

I think the vet is going to be surprised. The holiday at nene country park has had a wonderful effect. She is like a five year old at present. WE are not kidding ourselves but who knows, we may be able to give her another holiday in May. As long as she is happy and pain free, that's all that matters.
