How many here have 4 Motion? Worth it?

I run on MnS in summer and shoulder months, winters in winter.

My MnS have got me off a couple of saturated fields and performed very well going along a track that didn't look one bit like the road that the sat-nave suggested was there. Water, mud and slippery rocks and performed well.

I've used winters in winter but no others so cannot really compare but performance was as expected.

I have doubts in my head of the value of winters compared to MnS in most terrains and conditions that my Cali is going to face. However, again, it is that thing in the head, Winters give me confidence to go places and at times that nothing else would.

There is no question about a proper winter tire is better in winter and a proper summer tire is better in the summer. If it is hot a so called "All season" tire can become really slippery and have very long brake distances.
I would say on such a heavy vehicle it is really recommended to change tires between summer and winter.

Fully agree. I think the weight of the vehicle really needs to be considered.
Going forward, I might look out for a second set of winter steels with winter tyres fitted. Actually change the rims around Oct/March.

Some good points on this thread.

or when the average drops below 7deg

The main difference with true winter tyres is the rubber is comparatively soft and if the weather gets above 10 degrees they wear rapidly. Last winter was so mild I never put mine on. They do make an enormous difference though in snow and ice.

Have you used specific winters in the past to compare the Cargos in winter?

Is so, did they inspire winter confidence.
Not on this vehicle.
These tyres are accepted in those countries that require seasonal tyre changes.

I think 35c on the Italian Riviera would be considered hot enough. I certainly didn't notice any increase in braking distances or grip with my 4 Season tyres, and you need good brakes and tyres when driving in Italy. So unless you have some reputable evidence in relation to these specific tyres then I regretfully must Disagree with your comment.

I have posted this before but it clearly shows IMO that full winters are better than a compromise M&S tyre.
We were following my mate in his 4wd Bongo with Cargo Vectors on in our 4Motion with full winters. Now 4wd Bongos are brilliant in slippery condition due to the mid engine design giving better weight distribution, even better than the 4Motion.
You can clearly see the Bongo sliding and losing traction whereas the Cali didn't, in fact we stopped on the steepest bit and restarted without any problem.

I just love that video :)

Brings a lump to my throat, I'm getting to be a nostalgic old biddy in my dotage :(

I can't say, given my penchant for getting stuck somewhere even in the best of conditions my winters go on end of October and stay on until May so I've never really used my MnS except in summer and shoulder mud, and they have been very reassuring.

I wont see any one with practical knowledge arguing "all seasons" is as good as a proper season tire, summer or winter.

Summer, Winter or 4 Season tyres with or without 4 wheel drive are only as good as the person behind the wheel. An expert can do a lot more than an idiot can. I have had plenty of training and experience in the past. For the UK and Southern Europe All Seasons are the best compromise as we have truly variable seasons. For Northern Europe and Mountainous Regions then Winter Tyres are the better option.
Modern 4 Season tyres from reputable manufacturers can compete very well with the vast majority of specialised season tyres and have the added advantage of lasting longer.
4 Season + 4Motion + Training can hold its own.

4Motion + differential lock current t5 and ordered t6. Diff lock is optional 4Motion is essential not for off-roading but for daily safe driving, driving on steep gravel road.

Sad thing if anyone wanted more than 4 seats with DSG in UK they can't have 4 Motion!

Crazy or what.

All down to total weight and Drive Line Mechanics.

I am sure you are correct but could you explain more in layman's terms please.

I mean, as a counter example we have 7 seater 4x4s in UK some with V8 engine blocks. Plus, and I could be wrong, it appears that in Europe one can have DSG + 4 Motion and more than 4 seats...

There are weight limits for different vehicle types in UK so that maybe the reason. It has nothing to do with engine size and come to think of it nothing to do with the Drive Train as you can get a 4 Motion Beach with extra seats so it must be the overall road weight.

Just camped at Dune du Pilat at Pyla sur mer and a fellow Cali got stuck in the sand. So grateful for the 4motion and diff lock.

Did you pull him out?

I was there last week and saw a few cars getting stuck. Some people have no sense heading for deep sand. No 4 motion for us and we never got stuck, you just need to be sensible.

This might be a option for the rare occasion 4-motion is needed especially with the extra build and long term running costs of 4 motion. clicky.
