Hey Everyone,

We love kayaking and have a couple of sit on kayaks which we are planning to take with us when we go camping. However, we would prefer to leave the boats at the campsite when not being used (lowering the height and weight of the van). We've thought about chaining them to something like a tree (if available) or investing in a drive away awning and keeping them in there - out of site. Does anyone have experience or ideas on this?

Thanks

We use a bike lock to tether Loz Jr's Paddleboard to a wheel. It's not going to stop a determined thief, but we are normally on reputable campsites.

We’ve always put bike-lock type chains through the holes in the bases of the sit-on top kayaks and left paddles secured to roof bars. Never had an issue in 20+ years but who knows. Just make it as awkward as you can. They can be great fun here and abroad - were now more into SUP boarding (age is a cruel beast to your back)

Long versions of the cables with loops at the end. Can either pass the whole cable around a tree etc or if need more length ust one end around the tree, passing the other end loop before locking with a decent D lock.

Nothing is unbeatable, but stops the opportunist. Paddles, buoyancy aids tidied away. As with most expensive things you are usually ok on sites.

Also watch where you leave you California when you go off kayaking. We have some low life's who specialise in breaking into vans left unattended when you are out on the water. First hand experience!!

Thanks everyone, its reassuring that people leave them on campsites without them being stolen!

Investing in strong cables to go through the drainage holes sounds like plan A - hopefully we'll be able to attach them to something or at least make it as difficult as possible for them to be moved :thumb

I would drill a big hole through the bottom and
use a big chain and padlock.

We use a very long locking cable. About 7m long and wrap it round the kayaks and then to the van or anything else that is suitable. Quite easy to do, coils up to store.
