Locked keys in van

Where can I get a surf key and get it cut?
I had no luck with Timpsons, they insisted that they could only cut a “proper” key with remote etc. I got one from eBay, £12, just sent a photo of my key and received the key a few days later.

Well, to be fair i was passing on a tip from WG, and i don't think
Timpsons would argue with him. :)
I got mine cut at the Busfest for a tenner but i couldn't recommend that
as its only once a year.:)

I got really frustrated with Timpsons. Tried 2 different shops and they looked at the original key, plugged it into some sort of reader and said they were unable to cut a surf key. One even said they would need me to bring the van to them to check it worked!

Cobblers. :)

I got one cut via a photo from eBay. Also my local shoe repair / key cutter has made a surf key. I think he charges about £10. If you near to Thornbury (North Bristol) the Lee at Lee’s Mend a Shoe will do it. It is not that far from Slimbridge.

Some Timpsons won’t do it. I’ve used eBay also.

I also bought one from this company. Arrived early and worked. Now hidden on the van in a waterproof box with strong magnets attached. Won’t get locked out again!

Warning: Hi just locked keys in van and had spares flown to Wales to rescue situation. Had van since 2008 and fully aware of the issues with doors auotolocking etc. Thought may be worth telling my story.
Van was unlocked and I was looking for somewhere to place keys to keep safe whilst doing something else. I was on passenger side of van and as I approached van i instinctively pressed unlock button, I opened passenger door about 6 inches and placed keys in door pocket closed passenger door and walked away. An hour later returned and van locked. I won't bore you with the rescue mission but on investigation and playing around I could replicated the auto locking . Unless the door is opened a "significant" distance, could be linked to interior light sensor the van doesn't know door has opened and therefore locks. I am usually on the drivers side but due to way van was parked the passenger door was more convenient....not!
Its such a shame the solid key isn't removable from the fob.
Hope that this is useful for someone.

For future reference - it is. Push the circled pin out and the front blade separates. Easy to then hide just the blade anywhere outside the van to access in an emergency.

If it's any consolation, I did the same thing a few weeks ago. On that occasion I just sat outside and called VW Assist. Fortunately it was a nice day and Mrs B had her phone. The chap arrived after about an hour and used two out of three of his specialist gadgets to pick the drivers door lock. I believe the motoring rescue organisations e.g AA and RAC carry similar devices.
