Yes I know the title seems strange in a word of satnav and online Maps LOL But some people love them and I have been INSTRUCTED to buy some.

I have been informed that the Michelin Maps are the best as they are French but they are very big with loads of info on them, you can have either whole, Quarter or region maps at around £6 each or we have the latest AA A4 Atlas type at £13.99 for the 2025 edition

What are others using ??

Only mine is from 2013, so the latest motorways and other changes are not yet included, but it takes me all around France still.

Inside it looks like this:

It has some interesting features like black triangles meaning something interesting. Green/white dots meaning bike routes. 1 to 3 stars for cities or places with high visit potential.
Couldn't find my way without it. GPS is only for driving aid. This paper map is the key!

At the very least, get the plastic page edition! Anything else just tears to shreds before you’ve got off the ferry.

There's something great about just having that map in the van and spending an evening just browsing and deciding on your next destination !

Last time around Belgium I borrowed from a friend and was hooked. Need to get one of Iceland and Italy soon.

AA paper copy = “the works“ shop , about £5

my friends think I’m strange having a paper map in the car !

there is nothing like looking at a paper map for planning a route

Or in the case of Michelin France, identifying those secluded woodland glades, park ups near rivers etc.

You might find this unbelievable but the OS Map app on a phone has European coverage as well as the UK, There is a basic version that is FOC with premium options available at a cost. UK coverage is downloadable to your phone for 'on signal' areas, I can but assume the the European coverage is similar.

Does it create the rustling sound of paper?

Tbh though if you're map reading I'm not sure it makes a lot of differnce and a good opportunity to brush up your French ;)

Yes I agree, but the Michelin books have loads of information about places to visit driving tips road info and the like, unlike the AA english version that only has Maps and roads. I can take a photo of the sections and use my phone to translate to english..........or like you said try my French out LOL

We just used our phone to translate the bits we didn't know :thumb And agree that we've never seen an english version of it

In our experience, no paper maps beat the Michelin maps in terms of info and completeness and being up-to-date.

So, they're in French... Dûh, you're going to France! Learn French!

IGN do great maps.

Google translate to help - just use camera to scan writing. Easy and brilliant. Use it whilst you’re learning.

Camera assisted translator apps have been a lifesaver. Also use it decipher menus and translate Japanese (I collect Nihonto)

If you do prefer paper maps then you cant do better then Michelin if you ask me.

I always buy a new map every few years. No problem if not used it is there just in case. Old maps make really good present wrapping paper.

I still have a map of 2013, and apart from some highways, there is hardly a reason to buy a new one.
And I still have a immensive map of the year 2001, and I really like to look at what has changed over the years. It will certainly never turn into wrapping paper.

We have a Philips Big Road Atlas of Europe that we use for longer trip planning. We use a different highlighter on each trip so that we can look at where we’ve been each year. Brings back lots of memories over a camping glass of wine when we’re planning the next move.
