I bought new steel wheels and winter tyres from SMG and now see a huge amount of rust on the inside wheel rims. It looks terrible and surely cannot be right. ....? How do I remove it and protect the exposed metal?

Are you running it as per the photo, ie, with the hub nut exposed?

Surely should be a cap over hub nut to protect it ?? Like this...

Tis normal for hubs behind wheels to be rusty as they are bare metal.

Yep, thats the one Andy.

It's probably not going to stop the rusting completely, but it offers some protection to the elements.

If you bought the wheels without the caps, they are around £12 each from VW.

Thanks. Thought so. From a garage perspective should they be greased to provide additional protection? Would have thought vw would have advised to take the caps or add them....

You could remove wheels & clean hubs with wire brush, refit wheels & put a light smear of grease on the hub before fitting some caps. Don't put grease on bolts or the surface the wheel mates with ... else bolts will not torque up properly (may over tighten).
