Having had a VW bike rack on our T5, which I think was a great design and part of the California look, we've ordered one to go on our T6 which we hope we will finally take collection of sometime in 2016!

But having seen the pictures of the T6 bike rack that have been posted on the forum, I just can't bring myself to put something that looks like a load of scaffold poles on the back of our new T6.

How on the earth VW tweaking with the design, sharpening minor details such the side indicators ,headlamps, rear hatch door etc, can make such a pigs ear of the bike rack which I think was universally accepted as a very good design on the T5, is beyond me.

Sometime ago I believe it was Hotel California posted this picture image (1).jpeg of a T6 at the launch he attended showing a red T6 with a T5 type bike rack. Does anyone have any information whether such a thing actually exist or is likely to exist in the near future?

Yes, you would have thought only minor changes were needed by VW to alter the brackets to suit the T6 boot. Considering how popular these racks are it was an unusual decision.

That does look like a T5 rack on a T6 does it not fit?

Those are indeed my images took at the launch a CCN Amersfoort NL.
Do not know if it is a T5 or T6 rack but it is for sure a T6 Beach that hangs on it...
Could be they just mounted it to show but purhaps it is not actually to fit ?
I do not know .
Seen diffrent pics on here , bikeracks on T6 having a other shape below...

Do you have a contact at CCN Amersfort NL that could give us further information about the rack you photographed?

You could give them a call

But you might ad wel contact any UK dealer i guess .
Or the T6 owners having a bike rack , and ask them the part number.

What you fail to realise HC is just how useless UK VW dealers are.
I was in a dealers 2 weeks ago and we were using a a raty taty thumbed to death September 2015 options list, this they insisted was the latest version!!

Perhaps somebody with a T5 rack could try it on a T6 volunteer's Cali at the Cali club meet?

Not much Cali specialist in Belgium either , or not that i am aware of .
I gladly go to the Netherlands , always a warm welcome there...
Is there still no reaction from any T6-er with a bike rack...?

The T6 bike rack really does look pants, I was sitting behind a T6 in a traffic jam with one on yesterday, it looks like someone has just thrown some bits of ali at the back of a van and hoped for the best, such as shame as the T5 one actually looks good even if you dont own a bike

I had a good look at the T6 bike rack last week. It was on a new beach at my local dealer. I thought it looked OK for a bike rack.
I'm sure it's possible to modify a T5 one to fit a T6 if thats what you really want. I might look into it when I get a chance.

Here is the part number of the old rack for the T6:

I think the ugly rack is just for UK market as all the T6 i see have had the old style T5 one fitted

There's only one way to sort this out, I have a T5 rack if anyone wants to try it on their T6, Lancs area.

Does anyone outside the UK have a photo of their T6 supplied with T5 type bike rack so that I can ask VW the reason why UK customers get the ugly Quasimodo bike rack?

Something I found whilst looking for alternatives for T6 VW Bike Rack
Bottom line is it sound like Flamma will be releasing an alternative sometime soonish.

I have requested information from Flamma and will post on here when I do.

Bike Rack
For all our T6 campervans with a tailgate (Cromarty, Tiree, Sanna and Taransay) it is possible to carry up to four bikes on a fold down rack on the rear of the vehicle. To use the rack you simply fold the rack down, clip on the bikes and you’re ready to go. For the Jura, which always has double rear barn style doors, then due to the potential strain on the door hinges the rack can only carry 2 bikes.

When we fit a cycle rack to a tailgate we always have extra gas put into the VW gas struts that open and hold up the tailgate – this prevents the tailgate from closing unexpectedly because of the extra weight of the bike rack.

With a tailgate design the rack is not permanently fixed to the van, it is clamped firmly into place and takes 5 to 10 minutes to remove – hence people generally simply leave the rack and never remove it. Please note that the total weight of all the bikes combined cannot exceed 60kg. With the Jura however permanent fixings through the body work are required, so removing the rack is not possible.

For the T5 we did offer two different makes of bike rack that are made to fit the tailgate – one made by VW and another by Italian company Fiamma. However, for the T6 the style of the tailgate is different to the T5 and the rack requires a redesign to fit. Although VW have completed their redesign and their rack is now available, Fiamma however are somewhat slower and it looks like it will be late Spring 2016 before their new design reaches the market.

The Volkswagen rack is only available with rails to carry 4 bikes, an option for 2 or 3 isn’t possible.

For the Jura conversion the VW rack is not suitable but Fiamma do make a model that will fit the T6 double rear doors.

Done some more research and found reports of damage to paintwork with the Flamma so I'm probably back to square one. VW one is obviously going to do the job but to be honest I am still struggling to like it and in any case only need to carry 2 bikes. Atera Linea is the next one to look at.

Emailed requesting release of T6 Version

By way of explanation I am not normally into discussing any my ailments but I have screwed my back and have instructions to spend at least 3 hours a day flat on my back. So having just ordered a Cali what else am I supposed to do

Looks good and is fit for purpose. One definite is they are a very individual choice depending on circumstances.
One question I have never asked is can they be slimmed down by removing rails.

Uskoein,

Great! Thanks for the part number and photo.

I’ve sent the photo of the red Beach, your parts list and the picture of the grey Ocean to my UK dealer as proof that they are available and asked him to order one for our T6.

I expect the reply will be that they're not available in the UK, which will then prompt a question directly from me to VW UK Head Office. What this space!

I hope Forum Members take note of the Red Warning sign. A requirement in Italy and Spain ( Has to be Aluminium in Italy ) and present wether you have bicycles on the rack or not.
