Roof fault error message

Have you tried disconnecting the control panel from the back and then reconnecting, might be worth a try as you will need to do a reset when reconnected.

I haven't done it but I will try it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi and thanks for commenting. It's good to hear from the one who did it successfully :)

I did not know that the sensors could be connected in a wrong way. Is there something specific that could be done wrong when connecting them? Can the sensors be connected upside down, or in some way that the magnets don't function as they should?

The mechanic was completely puzzled by them not working and said it seemed straight forward to replace them. He checked the wiring and the sensors and all have voltage passing through them from the sensor to the panel, he said.

I did not see the sensors myself, as he ordered the ones you listed directly from his supplier (for a rather low cost of around 13 EUR each).

I will try disconnecting the panel, as you suggest and resetting the system.

He said some of the old sensors were corroded and some had their plastic housing cracked.

About the bypass, hopefully he will do that next week for me. I live in the Netherlands and the one VW camper dealer that has diagnostic equipment to hunt down what error 1000 means can't see me until the end of July :(
Yes they sound corroded and broken. Same as mine. Seems logical that was the fault.
The sensors came with brown and red wires so difficult to get wrong. There was a complication about where to cut the wires when I got to 2nd or 3rd sensor but it’s all mentioned in the instructions.

I didn’t disconnect the hoses, just worked around them. So he did that differently. Quite fiddly. I’m trying to remember if they could be put in the wrong way up. I doubt it. Hopefully you will get there eventually. I’m sure your electrician has more knowledge than I do.

I drove to the camper dealer yesterday and managed to convince their electrician to help me. He said he’d help me if I come back on Monday. He’s got over 30 years experience with VW campers, so, fingers crossed he can work out what’s wrong.

He said that although difficult, it is possible to get the wires connected wrong, in which case the panel won’t work. He disconnected the whole panel for me for the weekend to stop the annoying warning noises.

I hope it’s something silly that he can fix on Monday

The fact that he disconnected the panel to stop the alarm is a good sign.:thumb

I believe one can resolve the roof issue by buying a replacement loom then cut the sensors off and splice on to the existing routed loom. This approach avoids the strip down and breaking factory installed seals. The loom is fine it is only the sensors that are defunct.

Or, as has been done by some Forum members, just buy the sensors and replace them. This has worked perfectly in the past but not in @PaulBastowski s case , which leads me to suspect a faulty replacement sensor or miswiring.

Indeed. This guys has been working on VW campers for over 30 years. It took him 10 seconds to open the trim above the control panel and get into the roof space. It was amazing to watch a real professional work :)

It is fixed! The roof opens and closes again :)

It turns out that my mechanic wired two of the four sensors incorrectly somehow. In the words of Rob, the mechanic from the VW Camper dealer: “he got the colours wrong”. I don’t know what that means, but it cost me another €275 to fix.

The job took 1.6 hours of labor and they replaced the two miseries sensors with expensive VW versions. Again, I don’t know why but I’m happy it works again.

Thanks for your help everyone!

Glad it’s all sorted. Enjoy.

Who was the vw calafornia specialist you used. Blooming hard to find them. Where abouts is he/she based?

Hi Roadrunner 45, we experienced a similar situation on our Cali Ocean. I took it to VW Vancentre, Manchester who diagnosed a faulty roof sensor. They advised that this is a known fault which occurs with age (2012 van). They replaced both roof sensors and the cost was £1000, OUCH! Lets hope it lasts at least another 10 years.

Above £450

Or you can do it yourself with my instructions for about £60-100.

VW dealers £1000-£2000

If you scroll down you will see 5 of the multiple other threads about this.

They did likewise with mine. Unfortunately there are 4 sensors and they only replaced the 2 faulty ones. I have loom with the other 2 on ready to replace when the weather gets warmer.
