You can buy the spacer fabric used in readymade toppers online. It looks a bit like a string vest with vertical fibres sandwiched between to give it the sponginess. Sold by chandlers as anti condensation matting. We just cut it to size and put it in a washable cover made from a cotton sheet. Works well and cheap.
