We are planning a trip to Spain and Portugal in early February however we’ve just been told by a friend we may need the above to enter and stay in Spain. Does anyone have experience of the document?

These aren’t really designed as a requirement for entry for tourists, there are some specific circumstances where you could be asked, for instance if you tell the border guards you plan to stay for months and have no accommodation booked or explain that you are planning to live with friends / relatives for several months you may be asked for proof. I think it gives the border guards a method to reject ‘undesirables’.
My son teaches climbing and lives out of his panel van near the crags when he visits Spain and he will stay for six weeks at a time and has never been asked.
