My 2014 has those same struts, folding inwards. However I still use a Bungee, for the main reason that we rarely have "windless" days in the UK , and elsewhere during Autumn, Winter and Spring and and as the TV advert says " Every little bit helps."

I think it seems to be working well to me because I still have the original folds in the bellows. Once it has been up for a few times in anger and these folds have dropped out I'll probably be saying the same as you!

I took a couple of photo's of the roof this afternoon before I started installing the Cali Cozy. I think it looks more transparent in the photo's then in reality.
