Uninterested Cali Owners

Give @Rob GRIFFITHS a break , seems he is "looking to buy" maybe once he ownes a Cali he will feel the need to go and chat to every Cali owner on site himself;)
He is beeing honest giving just his toughts . We all do, each in our own way ...so do i , some have noticed:D

Perhaps they were on holiday to be with each other.

Perhaps they didn't want to talk about VWs - why would any sane person? Nothing you say implies that these people were in any way impolite to you.

What makes you think you had anything in common with these people apart from owning the same model of camper van?

I find the most damning part of your moan "I would understand if it was a hire vehicle" ...

I won't conjecture on what you mean because most interpretations are pretty crass.

I am new on this forum too. I am here in this forum because I am very interested in buying af VW California and therefore looking for information about the van.
It is a surprise to me that in buying a VW California I am expected to change social behavior when entering a campsite or just by being around my car in the public.
It makes me ask myself if I am ready for this!
I thought it was just a car.

Welcome @Ole on your first post .
Owning and travelling with a Cali does not mean you "have" to socialise with every other who shows up with a other Cali .
But the fact you show up at a "California forum " does reveil you are intrested in meeting others....or am i beeing wrong?

I doubt if anyone changed social behaviour, or felt the need to "conform", just because they have bought a specific vehicle :)

I certainly do not. However if I see another California then I am interested for two reasons.

1: Nosiness on how their's looks to mine

2: Are they someone that I have talked to on this forum.

Apart from that I am a naturally gregarious person, love waving, saying Hello, being welcoming .... but also love my own space.

Neither is it just Cali owners that I get talking to. Anyone who is friendly with me is welcome to enjoy a glass of wine or whatever but if I feel the need to stop it there then I have never had a problem saying "goodnight".

Nothing changes when you have a Cali, except for the "feel good factor", and how you interact with others is entirely your business and no one elses and you should in no way whatsoever feel obliged to conform to a "code"....

I constantly have to remind myself that this is a bulletin board and as such and like most has a very diverse selection of members.
You can post on almost any subject and someone will disagree with you and someone may even agree.
We are all a bit different and have different requirements.
The board has many functions, providing guidance advice and information and yes even opinion. This is probably the most dangerous area and choosing to give one and having a pop with your first post as someone did was probably not a good move

Back on topic.
I tend to be quite chatty but we all get occasions when we would rather be left on our own. I'm sure most of us can communicate this in the right way. On this occasion the couple in question may have just had a blistering row perhaps over questioning their partners navigational skills, perish the thought

I intend to use my van in all sorts of ways, on some occasions I shall be happy to be on a busy site with lots of chat over a good barbecue and a bottle of wine. On others it will be a bit of wild camping and a snooze after a day on my bike.

Welcome by the way

Mike

"But the fact you show up at a "California forum " does reveil you are intrested in meeting others....or am i beeing wrong?"

because I am using the internet to gather and and maybe later share information about VW California does i my world not give any indication about I am interested in meeting other people or not - totally different thing.

I am generally open minded and like meeting new people, but I am also a free spirit who do not like "expected behavior".
Remember this post is about a Cali owner being condemned on this forum because he/she did not want to socialise drinking wine together.

Thank you, but...

.. now there is a parental advice on how to behave on this forum which I don`t find necessary at all. Expected behavior in campgrounds and expected behavior on this forum - same culture?

There nothing like a expected behavoir , as you call it , on this forum .
Never has , never will , we all say what we have to say . Some things are indeed not done....
Usually we take things "light" and with a ;).

And for the record i never condemned the original poster.

Welcome to the forum, lots of info on life with a Cali here. No one expects social behaviour to change, I think the original poster was just looking for a little chat regarding their similar vehicles. I'm sure this would apply to other less common vehicles too i.e.. two Ferraris/ Porsches etc. parked next to each other on a car park. It would be lacking manners to not really acknowledge the other if spoken to. Only my opinion of course. Are there many Californias in your country by the way?

I see this is your first ever post Rob, very nice intro.

We do all have something in common, it's called a 'VW California' If we did not all like to talk about it then why is there always 500 news posts to read on this forum every time I login? Why are there gatherings every few months with hundreds of people attending?

I am assuming you are the type of person that would not talk to others if you met another Cali owner, I totally respect that and good luck to you my friend.
Still not getting this....it's not compulsory to chat but being polite of course is the right thing to do....we don't go to meets, it's not for us but that's not a criticism of those who do as I can understand why people want to meet etc..but....just because someone doesn't conform to the norm doesn't mean they are miserable or not polite....you have used this forum to slate someone when you have no idea why they acted as they did...perhaps you need to give it a rest?

I don't think he has slated them, If I was approached by a neighbor on a campsite for a chat I would be more than happy to have a chat and a beer, if some reason I did not feel in the mood I would be polite and decline, it sounds like the people he approached were just ignorant.

I never used to be into the meet thing but after going to the farm meet in Somerset last year ( i think there were 150 Cali's? ) and I was amazed at how people from so many different backgrounds all got on with each other so well, we made many new friends that weekend and can't wait for the next one.

It's amazing how this thread has bought out people from both sides of the fence .

I'm not against the meets ( which are quite rightly well attended and enjoyed by those attending) which I explained above.....my view is that the unwitting focus of this thread has (to date) not had a chance to defend themselves (and I wouldn't blame them if they didn't), why should they be criticised publicly for doing their own thing? As a minimum it's unfair but also inappropriate....just my view

You assume too much my friend, just as you assumed too much about the people you vilified in your original post. For me, the topic is closed.

Thanks for the support. I am looking to buy. I am friendly and I do do talk to strangers (occasionally). However I don't generally expect people to want to engage in conversation with me simply because they have the same jacket/car/trousers/bicycle/tent or hat as me.

@Rob GRIFFITHS i notice you speak English. I too speak English, what a coincidence, what are the odds! I assume that you must be passionate about speaking English and are available to talk about this at a time of my choosing. In fact I'm going to interrupt your holiday so that we can talk. if you don't want to talk don't worry, I'll go on the internet and complain to my chatroom buddies about you.

We are just back from 'restival' at The Travellers Rest in Fareham. We pitched up at noon next to an extremely well looked after blue T2. After a few minutes we got talking to the owners and before we knew it we were inside each other's vans showing off our prize possessions. We finished our last drinks with our new friends at almost midnight.

Ooo saucy!

I always exchange cheery waves with the owner of the only other chilli pepper red Nissan X trail in our area! I have only ever seen that and two others. Wonder why.....:)

I see troll @fred had to stick his oar in as usual, I have lost count on the amount of threads where he falls out with people
Q.E.D.

By the way, I've donated money to the forum charity, freecycled several items to other forum members and contributed lots of information on here. If you don't like what I have to say then put me on ignore, you troll!

This is the strangest thread ever

Not really. It has clearly and usefully established that there are two quite different types of Cali owner:

Type 1. People who believe we should be basically courteous and exchange a smile and hello, and if others want to chat then in the right circumstances that's fine or even to be encouraged.

Type 2. People who are positive about engaging in chat with others when it seems appropriate and desired on both sides, but who also recognise that at other times just a smile and a polite hello is enough.

Obviously, these two groups are violently at odds with each other on a forum thread...

(Okay, coat, hat, I know the drill...) :talktothehand

I don't see this as just a Cali thing. We were camping with our Caravelle/drive away awning set up this summer and three guys arrived late evening and pitched next to us in a Merc van. I let them get established and went over with three bottles of beer and said welcome, you look like you need a beer. Ah!, they were all t total. Ok, the beer won't go to waste. They kept themselves to their selves all weekend. Fair enough. Would I do the same thing again next time? Sure I would.

This is the strangest thread ever

Have you read the portable toilet topic....?:D

Seems some feel the need to offend eachother , could we keep it clean please?
There's no need to give eachother nicknames;)
