Tyres - Which Brand?

My cali has managed to munch its way through a set of front tyres in around 10000 miles (which seems quite quick!). I have 255/45 R18 103Y which are Extra Load rated and until now I have been using Continental ContiSport 5's.

Have been looking at other brands, whilst there doesn't seem much of a saving financially I'm after something that still gives good performance but maybe lasts a little longer.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Wow!

I have 16400 miles on mine and the front tyres are down to around 3.5mm.

My opinion is that you simply can not compare others tyrewear to yours .
Each has a diffrent driving style and thats a crucial factor when it comes to tyrewear.
Also tyres in diffrent size of the same brand can behave very diffrent....
To much factors to count in to start compare .

If you need tyres , go to a qualyfied tyreshop and aks theire advise.

+1 for Hankooks. Front lasted about 12000 miles to 4mm. Changed those but backs are still 6.5mm.
Changed your tyres at 4mm tread depth? Wow, isn't that a bit, well, OTT?

My first set of tires were Continental 255/45 R18 103Y lasted 11000 miles Michelin have a harder compound up to now 16000 miles and still got plenty of tread left :thumb

I went for the Continental Van Contacts 200: 225/55 R17. Quite expensive however I am sure there are better tyres which are less expensive. I thought about Michelin Latitude Cross...

Goodyear Cargo Vectors- Did 20,000 on 1st set and changed after 20,000 miles when at 3.5 mm December 2015. 2nd set did 21,000 miles and changed in December 2016 at 4mm.

If I wasn't using the California everyday throughout the year I might have delayed changing until at 2mm tread depth, but that's just me and my style of driving - wanted the tread for winter.

What have we learned so far after one day ......all different tyres and everybody seems happy .

At £95 a tyre I am not bothered about losing a couple of mm and the associated lack of grip/ water dispersion to be honest.

OK, I'm obviously a bit tight! I need to be as a pensioner!! ;)

Hotel California, any chance you could lose the smart arse comments? This is a forum and its for discussion....that's what we are doing, I for one am finding out what others are using following my trip to the local tyre fitters who were in fact useless.

Thanks everyone else for your info.

If your trip to the local tyre fitter was useless seems the choice of tyre fitter not matches the tip i gave about going to a qualified tyre fitter ;)
Now you can tap on the red X below to the right if you feel like it.
Lighten up a bit....

Some think it is smart arse comment , others call it rational thinking.

@Lost Boy , seems this time you did follow my tip , feeling better now already?

If it was just once I'd agree, but I could look at almost every post and you are there, usually stifling good conversations, usually in broken English, perhaps you should lighten up a bit, you are supposed to moderate, not have the answer to everything... fortunately most of the others who have posted on this thread have completely ignored what you have said....I wonder why?

Yes we all drive differently, yes we all have different road conditions, carry more or less passengers, but it doesn't stop some of us wondering what others do, or sharing experiences....surely that's what this forum is about. We have a shared love and we want to engage with others about it.

Thanks to those who made suggestions, thinking I might try Kumho or possibly Hankook.

Please share your thoughts about these two brands/tyres. And maybe you could compare with the Continental ones. A couple of friends love the Latitude Cross or in winter the Nokian (D3 I guess).

Certainly will when I change them :)

I am not "supposed " to moderate anything .

I "always" give clear direct info within' my own knowledge.

I "try" to write englisch as englisch is not my native language seems most would understand what i write . Sorry if you can't read thru my typefaults...

I "wish" i had an answer for everything it would help the forum get rid of a lot misery.

Do keep us updated on your tyrechoice who knows might follow you

My 2p's worth (based on cars more than vans though) is that Continentals wear quite quickly (I had several sets of sport contact 5s and got about 10k out of them). Switched to Michelin and still going strong after about 12k.

I have Good Year Eagle F1s on the van and they seem to be wearing well too, but not done as many miles on those.

My Cali came with Goodyear when new in 2010. Once they were worn I switched to Michelin and have stayed with them since.

Have had van lowered with VW 30mm springs. Cali feels very sure footed on Michelins.
