Hi everyone.

I’m starting a Facebook group called Cali Cooking. I belong to a lot of cooking groups from around the world and some for camping cooking. They’re all friendly and welcoming but I find that a lot of people are using domestic style ovens in caravans and motorhomes, or microwaves and other large equipment to emulate what they have at home. Even in some of the VW conversions there are built in grills, little ovens and microwaves. Although my Cali won’t be arriving till the Spring (fingers crossed), I’ve been campervanning for many years in a Toyota Hiace, without even a hob, using a portable camping stove and various equipment for outdoor cooking.

So, my thinking is: as a Cali owner we have to be very creative with our cooking and use of space to carry extra equipment, provisions, etc. I’d like the group to be a place to share skills, knowledge, experiences, techniques, hints and tips and recipes, where people can ask questions and offer solutions. It will be a closed group.

The only problem is, to start the group I need some Facebook friends. If you think this is a good idea and would like to be a founding member please message me back. We could hookup as Facebook friends and I can make a start. My Facebook username is vicvan if you want to check me out.

I’m over the age of 12 so therefore don’t use Facebook.
I’ve never done Facebook before this year and only use it to join interest groups (knitting, camp cooking and camping overnight stops). I’m not interested in it from a personal point of view. Have been amazed at how much I’ve learnt. The most interesting thing for me is the cultural differences around the globe - how different peoples approach the same task in different ways and achieve the same outcome.

matt already has camper cookout . https://www.campervancookout.com/
Hi Calikev. Thanks for that. I didn’t find that one when I search. I’ll take a look and join it. Cheers.

Ps. Have put my spare wheel lock (from the shop meet) in a safe place, but no news yet on our Cali apart from the order number. I’m going crazy now our old van can’t be used. Having to resort to cooking out in the garden!

i see 3 vicvan's on facebook ...is it the one with only 1 friend atm ?

How about do it on the forum instead? Sounds really good and I would be interested in this. I am not on Facebook
I’ve never facebooked before. But joined to access interest groups this year. I’ve used a pseudonym for my user name and my profile details are really sketchy. Don’t use it for anything personal, just the groups. So am only using it as a tool. I’ve found it really worthwhile, informative and interesting. I’ve learnt loads and shared the knowledge and experiences I have to help others. Totally different to what I expected.

now, i see even more vicvan 's popping up , with hidden profile and friend info

please, try to add me :Tan Ne , same avatar

It is set up now, Tanne, so will add you at the weekend when I will get chance to put some content in.

This was why I started campervan cookout groups but Ill be honest there hasn't been much discussion in there. People seem to watch the videos but rarely post anything themselves.

Ill be happy to try and take part but you will need to prompt the discussions I think at least in the early days. Lack of time is the only reason I have not yet.

Thanks for the advice, Matt. Hope to have some content in at the weekend.

Tan, what does your Facebook avatar look like. Does it look like a cartoon character with a white & blue jacket on?

the same avatar as here : cartoon of the freak bros blue van

Hi guys

Well, I’m no longer Norma-no-mates. Got 2 non camping family members to friend vic van & get it set up. At the weekend I hope to put on a bit of content. I think the best way to go will be for me to post the web address in this forum so you can join for yourselves (rather than me add you as a friend).

The name is Cali Cooking because that was my inspiration & it will be my personal focus of course, but it will be open to non Cali owners too if they want to join. There’s a whole host of other campervanners (even campers) who’ll face (or have faced) the same kind of conundrums as we do regarding equipment and space. I think knowledge sharing from different perspectives opens up more thought provoking discussions and “out of the box” (wow, that sounds pompous- not meant to be) problem solving.

I do think it would be good to have a separate forum in this club too. I was surprised there wasn’t one for cooking and from people’s comments there seems to be the desire for it. What do you moderators think?

Back soon, Elly (alias Vic Van).

What I dislike about FB (though I use it) is that stuff disappears, never to be seen again.
I’ve noticed that too. It’s like coming on here and the forum having a different layout and different topics every visit. And some person you never heard of wants to be your friend!

Anyway, if you need someone to savour the food you all prepare just let me know ;)

I think that’s a great idea too, kp64zi, but I think it would be a bit restrictive for what I want to do. Not everyone is a full member here, so wouldn’t be able to post images and there may be some other restrictions too.

I think a good way to go would be a forum here and my separate Facebook group (of course there are other good groups too on fb about campervan and outdoor cooking).

I’ve always been dead against using Facebook, but if you read my posts in this thread you’ll see why and how I did & what I use for. I’m not trying to promote it, just saying.

Anyway, either way I hope we’ll be sharing ideas, skills and knowledge soon

+1 for this forum

Perhaps the mods can create a suitable area?

That won’t matter. It’s not a website or a blog, or even a formal set of organised forums. It’s more fluid than that. It’s a different means to share stuff and that’s why I think it’s worth it.

Surely the mods would support a separate gastronomic division ;)
They may group all this together:

Luckily I don’t mind a bit of chaos, motacyclist! As for food tasting - you’ll have to fight me for it first and anything covered in chocolate is mine anyway, by default

Hello again.

I think we’re at the stage where I’ll post the link to the Facebook group for information and those who want to connect, can. Those who don’t want to can leave it.

I’m sure the moderators will be in touch if they think a cooking forum is appropriate or not for the club.
