30 years special & wheel queries

Ah man.. I want something that is Ronal turbo style really, but these are the closest I could find that have the load rating for a van and that are only 18's. There's lots of 20's out there but I just don't think that's going to work practically.. I'm hoping that these are going to be better in the flesh than the look of them fitted in photos online? Especially re-finished in red!
I had ronal turbos on my Mk 2. Cracking rims :thumb

I had 50mm H&R springs and standard shocks for a while. The ride was really bouncy and it crashed into pot holes. Went for the SoLow coilers from Transporter HQ and I can't believe the difference. It drives brilliantly, nice and level in the corners, not harsh but no bounce either. Completely transforms the look of the vehicle as well, its not for everyone but I love it.

As you’ve made the investment in coil overs then you can vouch that it was a worthwhile investment? What’s the deal with the superlo Shocks transporter HQ are promoting? Are they custom billsteins?

My only worry with doing the 30mm drop is that I won’t be happy it’s enough and then it could have been £600 toward coil overs.. I’d probably still want to use the Vw Eibach ones though because of the warranty, and that will make it even more pricey than the B14’s which I’m sure do exactly the same thing.

I still think only going to 18’s is probably the right choice for me as I want to get om camp sites and down tracks without issues.

It does sort of seem a bit silly to put coil overs on a van as it’s not a race car and it is literally for looks alone. I also read somewhere that the ride is harder on the coil overs than it is on lowering springs? Is that your experience? I guess as you were lowered 50mm before it would have been quite a lot stiffer than a 30mm drop tho?

I don’t think I’d want to go quite as low as you have, it looks awesome but I want to get the front splitter too, and I still want that to get that above a Kerb as a minimum, bearing in mind the track comment..

Still struggling to make a decision as you’ve probably gathered!

It is definitely silly but, I see it as more of a "lifestyle" vehicle rather than just a camper and I love tinkering and making it look just a little different, not over the top. As for the cost, this is my take. I spent 50k on the vehicle and put springs on it that cost £300 ish, whilst it looked better than standard the drive was pretty horrible. These SoLows are in a different league from both my previous and standard setup. It really does handle like a car now. There is no need to go as low as yes, I am going to struggle in some situations and when we go to the Alps in the winter I have chains to consider but will cross that bridge....

Yes, the suspension is developed along with Bilstein and I had Transporter HQ fit it at their base, can't fault them.

Looks Awsome ....
Always Had b14s on my California’s ,like you say if your spending 50k on a van you want it to look how you like.
Im always mindful of the suspension just like I am pulling up to kerbs with the alloys.its not rocket science..the b14s on my Cali went very low compared to a standard Kombi/transporter due to the weight..for warranty reasons I’m going for the eibach coilovers from vw just hoping there as good as the b14s..

So what’s the script with these eibachs then. Is it something new Vw are offering? Are they lower than the sport line 30mm springs? How much are they to supply and fit if you know?

Vw approved coilovers supplied by vw through eibach so like the sportline are 30mm lowering these are fully adjustable from 30 to 65mm and with proper eibach dampers not standard t6 commercial dampers .
Fully warranty approved

They ain’t cheap but as you know neither is a California.
Around £1450 plus fitting...
I like a lowered van always have and as long as you buy quality gear you don’t get this harsh ride people always seem to think...

I think I’m definitely swaying to the line of thinking, buy once and buy right! I’m planning on keeping the van for 10 years+ so I should get the use out of them... I’ll let you know if I find a better deal on the vw eibach coilovers anywhere. Mines a 19 plate so gotta think about the warranty, otherwise I wouldn’t be worried

Thanks for that. I’ll be emailing them tomorrow for a quote. I will be getting it booked in if they can get hold of them.

Just had some feedback from my friends at VW. If you have the radar on the front bumper it will need adjusting at the same time. This takes the cost inc VAT above £2k

I have ACC and have no issues whatsoever.
Good to know
According to eibach and vw this is something that needs a recalibrate only the acc but if you have it and it’s fine and not needed that’s a bonus ....
I have not ordered it because I wanted a manual and it’s pretty pointless acc without dsg I

I have the radar but not AAC - i've asked them if it still applies - TBC as i think its connected to the auto braking, which as a safety feature will definitely need re calibrating if its too low.
It will be slamming the anchors on when it spots a speed bump...!

Hey buddy
I have been through 2 van centres with all this information and was assured it’s just the acc but this is just what eibach and vw says

Nearly there. Went for the VW approved Eibach coil overs in the end. Decided it was worth the extra cash to avoid disappointment and potentially having to do/spend more in the long run.... stuck with the 18’s and very happy with the result. Lowered around 45mm... May even raise slightly? I’ll see how we go. Powder coated my side bars too to match the grey wheels and grey mirrors and roof on my 30
Years.. Very happy. Will post pics of my pimped bike rack too when it’s back from the adonisers!
