Good afternoon,

This week I contacted Stuarts Insurance, giving them detailed information about the vehicle, me and the service I was looking for.

I got an email back that Stuarts Insurance saying they cannot insure campers for daily use, even if there is a second car in the household:

"... Unfortunately we don’t insure Campervans for primary use. We only insure them for holiday use. ..."

For the best of my knowledge there is only Dolmen Insurance left to provide insurance service for campers which are used as a daily drive.

Interesting is the Motorcaravan Club. I will have a look at the webpage. Maybe even with the yearly membership rate there might be some extra offers that makes it worthwhile.

You can go into 2mtr car parks as the cali is 1.90 high , I've been in St James hospital underground car park several times with mine
But anything under 1.9 mtr you won't fit

I am still worried to drive into a carpark even with 2 m height. According to VW Technical Dimensions the camper is 1,990mm high that is only 10 mm shy of 2 m!

As far as I can see (know) the awning will add an additional few millimeters to the height.

Also there is at least one car park in Dublin that is 2.1 m in height, but within the car park is an area which is considerably lower. Of course warning signs are only a few and difficult to spot. I only saw them while I was walking in the car park to find the way out.

The Motorcaravan club go through Allianz for the Insurance and are the only one in Ireland to insure for social domestic and pleasure purposes
But you must go through the club

mine is either 1.94 or 1.96m and its been lowered.

Have you measured yours at 1.9m?
The awning is not the highest point, i think the highest point is in
the middle of the roof.
 
Reading this thread I wish I could accept using my cali as a daily but alas Im in the other band on here that enjoy occasional spirited driving. For that a cali can never match a decent car for the pure pleasure of driving. So I have the affliction to own an Audi, Porsche, Skoda, Classic Alfa, Classic mini and classic motorcycle. So the cali just gets used for camping, I guess I should have bought a bigger camper really. In reality I cant justify any of them. Ah well.
For the OP you can certainly daily a Cali but its still a lumbering machine more akin to driving an old school Discovery / Shogun/ Landcruiser.

Mine is 1990mm and I can get under 2mtr barriers
Maybe they say its 2 Mars but they might be a margin for error , if I'm in doubt the other half gets out to make sure

If it's very busy on the péage, I go to the left or middle side with the 2 meter barriers. A lot of people (even with normal cars) don't take those lanes.
I think they are even 2,10 or 2,20 m high.
First time I went very slowly under the barrier, but now I know, I just fly through.
 
HI everyone, still considering purchase of a new T6.1 California Ocean in 199bhp / 7 DSG guise and this will serve both as a camper and my daily run around. Would like to hear owners' experience of running T6.1 California as a daily car.

I am late to this discussion, but thought I'd add a couple of thoughts. Whilst I agree with what everyone has said about the driving experience of a Cali, the thing that I miss is the load carrying ease of a regular daily car. Before we bought our T6 Ocean we had a number of different large estate cars - the last being a Volvo V70. I used to load it with furniture, garden waste, anything really and so long as I put some sort of protection in the load area, it would take tons of things. I used it in combination with a topbox to move my kids from student halls to flats on loads of occasions. Whilst on the face of it my Cali should be better at this job, as it is after all based on a van, there are a couple of reasons why it isn't.

Firstly, the storage area/wardrobe on the left side restricts the width of anything you need to carry and the materials inside are a very light grey and prone to marking, so you need to be careful about getting everything covered. Also - if you are like us, you will end up with your Cali loaded and ready to go camping at a moments notice. That means that if you want to use it as a load lugger you will firstly need to make space. I have given up trying to use our Cali as a replacement family car. It is fine for driving around on errands and normal runs, but I know that I will eventually trash the interior of what is a very expensive vehicle if I use it for any load lugging. A tow-bar and trailer would have been a good idea, but our Ocean doesn't have all the pre-electrics fitted for a tow-bar so would be a fortune to fit. I am instead going to buy an inexpensive old estate car for local stuff - and try to keep our Cali in a decent state.

I would counter the above argument by saying that the cost of buying and running an additional vehicle is likely more than the extra depreciation on the Cali. Plus the Cali get regular use as a daily drive, which is good for it.
I also think it’s fine as a load lugger and have used mine at the tip, take daughter to uni, etc.
It’s all down to personal taste imo.

I have been using our T6 beach 204 dsg as the only family car for 3,5 yearish.

All fine. Not sure I would have wonted to do this without the automatic dsg.

BUT, we are about to change our lives somewhat, by moving out about 25 km from our work spaces. School and work runs will increase our monthly distance to approx 3,000 km. I do not wont to do this in the diesal guzzling t6. I always felt the 204 was overkill.

So I am currently looking into an EV, leaving the T6 beach as our adapted car for a wheelchair bound son, my surf trips and other adventures.

Basically I can purchase an EV for the cost saving on consumption increase.
 
You are exactly right Sannox. That’s why I can’t get rid of my old estate car.

A Factory fitted Awning adds nothing to the height as the highest point is the roof centre line.

WelshGas, you are right. I just had a look out of the window. The highest point seems to be the middle of the roof. There it should be the 1990mm height.

I thought I saw somewhere that the awning will add a few cm. But better to be more careful as to drive ini / under something that is not high enough.... :(

Would just rather use the Cali.
Although I do have trailer, which I use for all the dirty stuff and load lugging ...

After a good clean a few weeks back.
Shame it’s not like that now
