Turbo Trainer

My wife and I share a Tacx flux (original version with belt issues). We both bought a super cheap bike which we keep next to the trainer and swap them on/off when necessary. Much cheaper than a Trainer bike and allows us our own saddles, handlebar widths etc.

I have a Wahoo KICKR Core on order via the Wahoo website....they were only 'in stock' momentarily. It should have been her yesterday, but I'll be patient... at least its out of the Netherlands and in the UK, one step nearer delivery. I'm planning on using Zwift and looking to get bike fit again... to break up the lockdown#3 run training. See you in Zwift soon enough I hope.

Rod will be gone....... sadly power doesnt rise in parity with body weight.

In Sweden most houses have washrooms, where the washing machine etc lives, one part of the Tvättstuga is my brutality cave, iPad normally set up for the Wahoo but suitably awful to remind of the wins ahead out in the open air, it’s a proper shithole and just how I like it

I will be playing catch-up game.
Avg 2.1-2.3W/Kg.
Although sustained 2.9 the other night. I was quite happy with that.
I have no idea how guys sustain the likes of 4W/Kg...

I have no idea what you are on about Lol :D

Got up and running with Zwift tonight, no idea what I’m doing yet, but it seems to be working

I think we could start a VW California Zwift training camp...
So is anyone up for this? I currently organise events every Sunday morning, as our regional race league obviously hasn‘t met for a while, nor is it likely to. I don’t mind organising something if there is sufficient interest.

Their are three ways to do this......

1) We organise an event where we all keep together, regardless of ability. This means the super strong and the beginner keep together in a pack. Great for training, but no racing / competitive element to it.
2) We can agree to all do the same event that is already running (by British Cycling for example). This means you join a larger event, joining the right category for our own ability (measured by your watts/kg). Cat A is the strongest / fittest, the Cat B, C or D, each group being slower average pace. (Can explain more later). Good because you race others of similar ability, but it won’t really feel like you are joining VW-Cali members at the time. We can post our finish times afterwards on this site maybe?
3) I organise a race event. This will be our own private event, where only members from here can join it, but it might mean you race on your own if no-one else has a similar pace to you.

If there‘s interest, we can maybe find a night in the week that suits the majority?

Just getting Zwift working is an achievement in itself. It has more than it’s fair share of bugs.

Zwift is all about watts/kg. Why you cycle, you generate power, measured in watts. If you divide that number by your weight in KG, you get watts per kg. So if you generate 150 watts, and weigh 75 kg, you produce 2w/kg. If a friend produces that same 150 watts, but weighs 50kg, they produce 3w/kg, so will move quicker than you because their power to weight ratio is better.

With cycling, there is something called Functional Threshold Power (FTP). This is how many watts can you sustain for an hour. You might produce 500W for 3 seconds, but there is no way you can hold that for an hour. As no-one wants to do a test for a whole hour, you do a test for 20 mins, and take 95% of what your average is. So, if you can hold 250W for 20 mins, you can probably hold 95% of that value for an hour, so you FTP is estimated to be 250 x 95% = 238 watts. Divide 238W by your weight in KG and you can compare yourself to others of different weights and power.

Sounds a little complicated when I type it out, but it does work.....basic power to weight equation allows you to race people of similar ability (as well as see if you’re improving if you can improve your watts/kg).

Yep. Happy to tag along and ride as a group. I ride sweeper for GGCC on Tuesday and Thursdays.

What events do you organise Moaksey?

Happy to tag along too. I was at 270w FTP at 90 Kg but had covid over Xmas so have dropped a lot of power. Great shout

Thank you for taking the time to explain, I think I get that now. I have a lot to learn.
Meet up sounds ace, once I figure out how lol

I’m game.
One mid-week evening sounds good :thumb
I’m new to Zwift, so happy to go with the best option you suggest.

In more normal times, I help with running the Central Cyclo Cross League (CCXL). This is for the Central region (Watford / Stevenage / Milton Keynes / Hemel roughly). Local clubs put on a CX event, and me and others organise those individual events into a league. This runs September thru January, and we hold the honour of not only organising the largest women’s only CX event in the world (180’ish women racing together), but for all age groups etc there are about 1,000 participants...split into age groups from ‘under 6’ to over 60.

As there are now no races, I organise events for that group on Zwift, called vCCXL, or virtual CCXL. I do one every Sunday, and considering the huge number of active riders, I only get 20 odd each week. But, we still score points based on finishing position, and run a league.

You will have to let us know how you get on with the bike.
If I had a bit more room, I would have gone down the smart bike route.
Hopefully my renovation will be finished in a couple of years from now and I will build a designated space for one.

Multiple alerts set and Chain Reaction one activated tonight.
On it in a nano second and ordered.

1 left according to web site.

Won’t be there long.

Edit:- gone already

Mike

Thanks for the tip. Checked Chain Reactions and they had a Tacx Flux 2 trainer in stock. So just ordered.
Had a refund from Zwift yesterday for the Suito Elite which had been stuck at port in Holland since January 4th.
Zwift couldn’t give me a delivery date as the issue was related to Brexit and DPD exporting issues.

Oh no ! You definitely NEED a fan when indoor riding , found out the hard way eh ?
The wahoo fan at sigma sports or amazon Is very good. I had 3 normal ones before and now just use this. Recommend
