The wave

So on the way back from collecting my Ocean, a short 20 minute drive 2 people waved at me, I wasn't ready, didn't know this was a thing.

Over the weekend out for a few day trips across Norfolk and Suffolk, it's about 50/50 seems if I wave they don't and visa versa.

What's the etiquette, I assume if we see a fellow Cali we wave?

We like to wave at any other VW camper, but tend to find your 50:50 hit rate.

I'll wave if I see you but often I spot vans too late. Sorry if you waved and me and I did not wave back. Sometimes a wave can make someone's day and no harm is done either way although maybe they are thinking you are warning them about something further up the road.

It’s when a fellow ‘dubber gives you an extra enthusiastic wave, and you react just too late - doh!! It’s good though, nice and friendly when it’s 2-way waving. The best experience I’ve had is 2 fist bumps through open windows while travelling through lanes in Devon !

On a trip up to Glencoe last week from the Peak District we waved at loads of VW campervans of all ages and types and got a 90%+ return rate....very impressed....;-)

We met a two-tone bayleaf green & white Cali (exact same as ours) on the James Bond Skyfall road (Glen Etive) and we got a very enthusiastic wave out of the window. It felt very heart warming...

Here in Belgium, and also in most of the neighboring countries on the continent, this is not common. It is mainly a habit of the "big whites".
Personally being also a biker, I notice that the majority of bikers are waving when we cross while riding, but hardly say hello once stopped.

Big waves, flashing lights and multiple orgasms as we passed another VW California Beach in grape yellow on the SW coast of Scotland last August.

It’s an interesting one. We’d say 50/50 is higher than we have found, unfortunately.

TBF sometimes we miss a wave and assume it’s the other way around on occasion.

The clear wavers are great and we wave back too.

As often as not though we overtake someone on the motorway and look across to smile or wave and the driver is doing their best to stare ahead and pretend to not have noticed a two tone Cali hurtling past!

We’ll keep waving though. It’s only cricket.

I never wave to bikes in the city, but out in the country I like to give them a nod or a wave.

Bizarre as it sounds, from our experience this summer, the worst area for NOT being waved back to is Cornwall! We reckoned that as there’s so many VW Transporter campers down there, the drivers get wave hand fatigue !!

To anyone living in Cornwall, . It’s the place of my ancestors and we love it otherwise

That's odd. We find many more "wavers" in the West Country than anywhere else along the south coast.

Then again, I've never been waved at by a Cali driver, only by other Transporter folks, especially those that are not "factory spec". Maybe it's the front spoiler and side bars that puts them off. Singles us out as "not a Cali".
Ho hum... I can live with that.

Ours is not so much a wave as a ‘half right hand raise’ off the steering wheel… seems to illicit a similar response of polite recognition. “Aye we’re having a braw time tae”
