Custom build - 2020 Westfalia Club Joker 4Motion - Offroad build thread

So you have the AT3a’s and not the AT Trail? The only niggle I have in switching is that they are 2 ply, I haven’t had any issues with the KO2’s puncturing despite taking them on some pretty rough ground and at low pressures - they’ve been bombproof

Maybe I’m mistaken about the ply. Anyway, this is a good article!

From my understanding the AT3's are basically a resilient road tyre with some offroad capability. Certainly not the last word in offraod chops. I think these are ideal for most-case Cali users. Quiet on the road, yet with decent grip in soggy grass. Also better mpg.

They can handle a bit more than soggy grass:

I think that’s probably the AT Trail version rather than the AT3’s which have more aggressive tread. Both are two ply though vs the AT4’s which I believe have beefier sidewalls.

I have loved the KO2’s but they are very noisy now the tread is worn and are nearly £100 a tyre more expensive than the Falkens so I can afford to destroy three of them and still be in pocket!

The video is definitely the AT3W’s. Not the trail.

Those look oversized for the rim width. Must make for quite a spungy ride. I plan to get 235 60 (or 65's. can't remember which have least impact on speedo) R17's AT3's

I’ve ordered a set to be fitted at the weekend. I was tempted to go for the 235’s but decided to stick to 255’s to maintain the 109 load rating.

I’m looking forward to a quieter ride and hope they hold up on the rough stuff.

Nice! You have 18 inch wheels then?

I do indeed, Twin Monotubes, great wheels but If I could go back in time I think I would go with 17” Warlords like yours, a bit more side wall would be useful at times!

The 235/65R17’s have a 108H load rating. That’s 1,000kg per tire. The 255/55R18 has 109 or 1,030Kg per tire.

I used to have 18’s and switched to 17’s for a bit larger sidewall for both comfort and off roading.

Oops we crossed wires.

Well I pulled the trigger and now have a set of Falken Wildpeak AT3’s. First impressions is they don’t look quite as badass but the road noise and comfort is like night and day vs the KO2’s. Braking is sharper too, I will qualify my initial thoughts with the fact that the BFG’s were well worn (down to 5-6mm tread).

I’ve got some overlanding/off road coming up next month so will be interested to see how they compare on some pretty rugged tracks.

So far very happy!

Awesome! Yes, they don’t look as badass but I think you’ll be happy. Keep in mind that they prefer lower Tyre pressure than the BFG’s. I run mine at 3.5 bar but have 3.3 ton van. I imagine you can run them at 3.3 bar or so. I ran the BFG’s at 3.8 bar. But I’m also on 17’s and you are on 18’s.

I’ve started at 3.2 bar vs 3.6 on the BFG’s so I assume that is helping comfort. Might go up to 3.3, fully loaded in overland mode I’m close to 3.2 ton! I had to up plate from the standard Cali 3080kg to 3200kg.

Presumably you up plated yours to get over 3.2t when you got air suspension?

Mine is rated at 3.5 ton now. Default on the transporter was 3.2.

Always thought it odd that VW didn’t use the T32 and not the T30 as the base vehicle for the T6/6.1 Cali's. Westfalia uses T32 for all their Jokers I believe? The up plating is an (expensive) paperwork exercise in the UK and as far as I can tell the only requirement to add an extra 120kg of payload is to ensure you have load rated tyres.

No idea. Westphalia used the LWB Transporter for all high roof Jokers. They used the SWB for all Joker City versions. Fortunately in Switzerland it’s just a matter of bringing the certification document and paying 100 CHF for a new document.

How about an updated photo with the new shoes?
