Hi all. Had some work done at an independent during which time the main battery was disconnected. Upon collection today, I was getting a single beep alarm when pulling away from stationary. Further investigation showed the roof symbol flashing in the roof display unit and found I had got Error 1000 on the unit. I raised the roof a little and lowered it to see if this fixed the problem but it didn't. After reading through the forum I was able to reset the error on the display and I tried the roof again which raised and lowered without any issue. I then reset the overhead display by removing the fuse under the passenger seat and tried again. When the display is on and the key is not in the ignition, the fault does not appear; within 10-15 seconds of the ignition being switched on the fault appears and I get a single beep / half bleep when I pull away.

Any ideas or pointers as to possible causes would be much appreciated (although I this the dreaded hall sensors could be the problem. Thanks in advance.

Pretty much guarantee that 1 or more of the 4 sensors has failed. Plenty of discussion on the forum (search) on how to replace. Good luck - easy enough to do yourself just avoid dealers if you can.

When the beep appears is the roof symbol on the camper display fully down (ie roof looks flat) or slightly open - if it has a slightly open symbol then the control doesn’t think the roof is closed.

The roof symbol has three states, fully up, fully down and a partial state. If there is a conflict or sees a faulty sensor it flashes.

If one of the sensors has failed and roof will still open, then this is an easier fix as the roof will still open to allow access to change the sensors without having to bypass the controller.

My strong recommendation of the symbol shows it partially open, then change all the sensors ASAP before another one fails and you can’t get the roof open.

Problem solved!! This morning, I took the California back to the garage who worked on it this week and they fixed the problem fully! Matt at Michael Key Servicing based in Long Eaton, Nottingham was recommended to me by last year and he was fantastic in the way he dealt with the roof issue. He plugged in his diagnostic system which did not show any errors and after a couple attempts to reset the system, the problem was still there. He then spent 20-30 minutes trawling the VW dealer bulletins as he vaguely remembered a previous VW roof issue some time ago and found the attached bulletin. Not sure if this issue is a known one in the forum but it solved the Error 1000 and flashing symbol straight away.

The fix is to go into the secondary menu (right and centre button together for three secs) and select 'Variant' in the menu. Once in this menu select 'Roof' and make sure 'No' is selected - mine had defaulted to 'Yes' due to the battery being disconnected while the clutch / DMF replacement was carried out. The setting was changed to 'No' and the problem disappeared.

Top marks again to Matt at Michael Key and I would fully recommend their work having now used them a couple of times this year. Definitely worth considering if you based in the East Midlands.

Good news amd great info. I suspect that was a bug in the earlier panels.

For info the camper panel, roof ECU etc don’t support diagnostics tools, they aren’t linked to the main vehicle network at all on the T5 and T6 (they are on T6.1) - the only diagnostics is via the camper display.
