California Vehicle Classification & VW UK

...and the next person who calls gets "that's the first time we have heard of that, I'll raise a ticket for that, but we need 5 to escalate it!"

Marco Polo is also an MPV class and their owners obtain insurance. Maybe try to get an underwriter to talk too rather than a sales rep!
Some of them have been refused cover as well.

Morning,
Just spoke to Volkswagen commercial vehicles uk, explained about picking up new California ocean on 1st August. Told them I wasn’t aware about it going to be registered as a MPV. Explained about how it limits insurance companies etc. He’s told me they are looking into this and hopefully it will get sorted. So wait and see:thumb

Great more the merrier.

Found this on the Marcopolo forum;
"DVLA rejected my application to have my MP reclassified as a Motor Caravan despite it clearly meeting their published criteria at https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...caravan/converting-a-vehicle-into-a-motorhome. I have written to them contesting their decision. Researching the matter further, I came across this https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/267623 . It seems DVLA have now decided that reclassification only applies if externally the vehicle looks like a motor home but it seems did not publish this change of policy. If they refuse again, I shall refer the matter via my MP to the Parliamentary Ombudsman.

What defines a 'motorhome' look, does a hightop transporter look like a motorhome compared to an Ocean? This really is a mess...

I have a complaint with VW, since 1wk, due to my Jul ‘19 Ocean being classed as an MPV.

To date how many of us with this issue have complained to VW UK

My cali was registered 11/18 and I've just checked the V5C and it's shown as a "diesel car" and body type "Motorhome".

Just had a call from VW UK giving an update, however there is no real update except they are
On it and will call me weekly to hopefully update me. Sure those who have also registered will aslo receive a call

Same thing they told me last week, I’ll Receive a call fortnightly ( what I asked for ) on updates

Opened a complaint with VW Commercial re miscelling, as despite them knowing DVLA have changed classification to MPV they did not make me aware and they advertise the California Ocean as a campervan when it is classified as an MPV by the DVLA

Can someone explain what difference it makes as to if its classed as a camper van or an MPV ?

Some people think it makes absolutely no difference at all, others think its a bigger problem than BxxxT & global warming combined and have cancelled orders on the back of it. You will have to read the posts & decide for yourself.

I think it is a big plus, the no caravan rule in covenent's and leases is a problem for many. People use MPV's to pull their caravans so acceptable on all but a handful of campsites. Taxation stays the same for California's and if insurers are so stupid to turn away top class business more fool them.

Will be an advantages in places like Swanage and some of the seaside towns liken in North Yokshire where seafront parking states no Motorhomes. Never been aked at campsite to prove it is fit for purpose camper. The only issue may be specialist insurance but I am sure this will be a short lived issue. My views on this and happy to swop my 2016 Motor home for 2019 MPV when I want a new van

My gripe with VW is that they were aware that the MY19's would be Classified as MPV's and made no attempt to point this out to customers. They denied me the opportunity to make an informed choice as to weather I would be OK with my Ocean being Classified as an MPV. I agree that for some people the Classification may be an advantage, for others a disadvantage and some people may see it as irrelevant but I have made a formal complaint because I was not provided with the information to decide if I was happy to make my purchase despite the new Classification.
