Discover Media Pro blackscreen

OK thank you guys, I really appreciate your advices and time.........before Ill do the fuses or battery, I wonder what happens after Ill reconnect, of course I understand what you wrote about the warnings and messages , but the the media will then again try to update I guess, and here's the problem because the Esim can't connect in Japan, ( I wasn't able to set up Weconnect as well because the E-sim doesn't work) so can the media update without E-sim ?

The short answer is NO. Many VW software updates are done over a hardwire connection, especially Firmware updates.

Thanks, So I guess this means that even I pull the fuses, then the media still needs to be updated before it works, I guess, sing

There are 2 types of computer programming for modern day In Car Entertainment systems.
Firmware, which is like the Operating System on your computer, Windows or Mac OS, and Software which is the various programs or Apps or Mapping Data.
The former is usually updated via a hardwired connection and the latter either via hardwire òr via the internet/wifi.
SD cards can also be used in place of Hardwired or Internet.
Whatever the problem disconnecting the battery won't wipe the software. At some point you will have to disconnect the battery to change it.
You could check to see which firmware and software version you have and see if you can get hold of an update SD card from VW.

True, I have the highest option media with the big touchscreen and it seems like it doesn’t have a plug-in or a SD card insert

On the T6.1 there is no SD card slot, Software updates are done using the built in WiFi system.

Technically Firmware is as it says Firm and programmed into a Read only chip. Can't be changed.
Software is now the normal Soft and can be changed or updated.

I would doubt that Firmware is used now as it seems that every type of product can be 'updated' at will.

Changing Firmware back in time involved Engineers having to get Updated Chips then going to Customer sites to swap them. A logistical nightmare.

I’ve updated the Firmware x 2 on my RNS510 in addition to the Software and Map data x 4 times.

Try these guys in the U.K. they are the most helpful company I have ever used.

if the problem can be fixed, they will know about it as they fix VW units under VW Warranty.

contact Hamid or Adam, if they can help I’m sure they will. if not they will tell you exactly why they can’t and offer advice accordingly.

good luck.

ps tell them you got their details through the VW California Club

Definition was made clear to me at the start of my 35 years as an Electronics Technician/Engineer.
Many lines of definition have become muddied over the years.

Hardware was physical solid part
Firmware was the part that controlled the Hardware and couldn't be modified, could be completely replaced by later update.
Software was the operating programme.

Firmware as such no longer exists as now merely a level of Software replaceable at any time remotely.

I'd say that you have updated the RNS510 programming twice and the SatNav function programme 4 times.

Just being pedantic which is your forte;)

I’ll let you inform these eBay sellers that they are wrong then.

When I started my car the screen continued to "loading profile". nothing to push since nothing works , just continuing loading profile......I tried the long push on the on/off and it goes to the clock, off and restart.....but again, only loading profile ??
this really sucks since Im in Japan where no dealer can do an update or recovery because they don't sell VW vans in Japan......so Im really looking for any help and ideas from you guys out there !!!
Is your Van a European van (import) ?
see below for the reason I ask

I email your post to SatNavSystem (yesterday) here is a response from Hamid:

“Regarding the issues you mention, the T6.1 is on the MIB3 platform which is completely different to the T6 (MIB2).
In all honesty, they are not nearly as good/reliable and we are aware of many issues with them regardless of whether they have the standard or upgraded system!

I myself continue to concentrate on the MIB2 / T6 systems as they keep us very busy but Adam is more knowledgable about the MIB3 systems.
We have actually performed a few upgrades on T6.1s from the basic system to the Discover Pro with varying levels of success as there are inherent issues with the MIB3 systems, even in the VW Golf Mk8 and ID.3 models.

VW are aware of this and are continually releasing software updates in an attempt to resolve the issues.

Please also note that Japanese region VWs are very different to European ones.
This is certainly true with passenger vehicle so I assume it would be the same in T6/6.1 models so information we have may not be relevant to Japanese vehicles.”

suggest opening up a dialogue Direct with SatNav System, details are on the website link I posted in post #36

Wow, thank you very much . My van was imported from Germany, with ever thing sat up for Europe.
I was aware from the beginning that I would not be able to use the navigation because it’s only European maps, but I just use Google map with CarPlay. However now I can’t connect so no navigation on the screen, which is the worst when driving in the big cities.
I will try to write them a mail today.

Thanks I’m working on it
If you cannot get an easy fix then you may be forced to change the unit out for an aftermarket unit. Much cheaper than replacing the VW unit at your cost. There are advantages to this. Easier updates. it can have all the functions of the VW unit with the appropriate wiring adapters and you can end up with more functionality, such as having it run off the Leisure Batteries with no annoying 20 minute runtime with Ignition off.
Absolut5 is a forum member who is very knowledgeable and can advise on suitable aftermarket units with the appropriate adapters for a DIY replacement with full VW functionality, if there is no one in Japan who can assist.

Thanks WG , I will try to look in to it.....it might be the best option, if there's no easy fix.
The company who imported my car from Germany, are trying to see what they can do, however I feel its more talk than action, (I hope Im wrong) , I also contacted VW service in Stuttgart, they replied that it "looks difficult" but they will try to see what they can do...........cross my fingers for an easy fix
Ill try to contact Absolut5 , thanks WG

just thinking, I wonder if you could make a network bridge to allow a dealer to update your system remotely.
instead of using the esim for access, join the van to a local wireless network that is connected to the dealer over a vpn?

or hire a vas system (laptop based) and have the dealer technician remotely login and perform the update.

or offer to fly the technician out with his vas laptop to do it.

Did you manage to make contact with Sat Nav Systems and if so did you get a solution or suggestion to fix your unit ?

Hi sorry for my late reply. Yes I did contact Sat Nav Systems and they couldn't help me at all...they wrote :

The profile loading is an internal issue that could only be solved directly with VW.
These systems are registered at the factory during the production so we cannot offer any assistance on that.
VW service at Germany wrote : we need you to be patient , there is something coming up soon.
we are planning to contact your importer to see if it is possible to install a software to your vehicle, as soon as it is available .............

Great news.
I have No problem at all in recommending SatNav Systems, they are a genuinely great company whom really know their stuff and care about the customer , I have personally used them several times and rightly they deserve to be recognised as an outstanding company.

I know from experience that Adam and Hamid really appreciate customer feed back, as all good companies do, so maybe drop them a line to express your gratitude.

Would you be kind enough to assist & help others whom may have the same issue : are you able to share the info that Adam provided?
