I could not find a specific thread regarding this question, so apologies if I’ve missed it.

Id like to know how you deal with the heat that builds up within the Calis in Relation to your dog. I have a labrador and I dread the thought of him getting stressed by the heat? Do you keep your dog outside say in Cage or Awning? Trouble is Awnings also get mad hot. Do you use the Aluminet reflective blankets? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also we would like to head abroad next year and again I wonder how he would cope generally in hot climates?

Are you talking about heat in the UK? Surely not. Our lab loves the sun. Just make sure you have shade and water. Common sense really.

Hi we have 2 Beagles that like a little sun but mostly we keep them in the shade.
We would never use a crate we use a strong stake & long line.
We try to always have the roll out awning up, if we are using the Comfortz room this is great at providing extra shade as we can use one, two or three panels. You can buy a single sun blocker shade or make one using a tarp.
For inside we have fly screens for the windows, door & tailgate and covers for both the front & rear windscreens. Have the roof up and vents open also provides a flow of air Some folk use fans we don’t.
Yes we are talking UK, dogs can become hot quite quickly, an over heated dog at best is very uncomfortable at worst is in real danger so best to do all you can to avoid them over heating.

edit : meant to say there is a section ‘Cali Dogs’ try looking there for any previous threads.

Both, how do you get shade in your Cali or under your awning? id say after A few minutes in temperatures above around 24 he’s looking to cool down.

Great thanks for the advice.

Ours like to crawl and lay right under the van, cool grass in the shade.

Cool coats, or a wet t-shirt, which they can wear, or tea towel which you can lie over them, or they can lie on, can also help.

We have three dogs, always camp in the shade and the dogs find the coolest spot.
I’ve included a picture of them wearing “ cool coats” these are game changers. My small dog could never cope with the heat UK or abroad when she was young. Now with the coat on we can travel anywhere with her.
Simple but effective, highly recommend.

Another great idea, thanks Cali1

With a cool coat make sure it doesn’t dry out - else you’re effectively putting a coat on a dog in the heat.

I use isotherm window blinds (behind the normal blinds) and leave them in place 24/7 in hot weather whilst camping.

I find with the roof up the interior gets hotter (even with external and internal liners) - so may be useful to close the roof. Instead I put the bed down and close sliding hatch.

Also, occasionally starting the engine and running Aircon can help to keep inside cool. Not ideal, of course, but can help.

An airsafe on tailgate allows airflow whilst van is safe.

Lota of ideas on here for you to think about.

I have had some excellent replies, I was thinking about the Aluminet reflective sheets to tr and form an extra layer outside the CAli, all trial and error I guess. Thanks for your ideas.

We’ve found that pouring cool water over our Weimaraner keeps her out of bother, she doesn’t like it much however if definitely helps. Someone else mentioned about a wet towel which we’ve done too.. oh and if you have them the occasional ice cube for them to crunch

I had ignored this thread as I thought it was about Dogs and their mating habits. :Nailbiting
A mains fan, provided you are on hookup, that the dog can sit in front of, combined with a water spray is probably as efficient as any portable aircon unit.
Dogs don't sweat they pant so a good airflow helps a lot. My son in Australia has no problem with his labrador using this method in temperatures of 40c+.

lol. I have a cousin out in Australia, he thought I was joking when I said I was worried about our dog in hot weather!

Whilst we haven't found a perfect solution yet, one of my criteria is that it's visible through the window. My main concern isn't the dog (because we simply wouldn't leave him in a car with any chance of getting too hot) but that someone smashes a window in their enthusiasm to save a 'suffering' dog. Seems to be a problem even in Teslas, which display a notice on the 17" dashboard screen.

My son has a 15" fan on the patio deck in the shade. It has a large timer/foot switch which switches it on for 15 minutes at a time. Kingsley, the dog, is now trained so that when he is too hot he sits on the switch, the fan starts and he sits right in front of it, eyes closed and tongue lolling. He repeats as necessary. :thumb

I wouldn’t dream of ever leaving him in the van on his own tbh, but that’s only my point of view.

Watch out for hot tarmac and other surfaces when walking your dog, it can burn their paws and lead to overheating. I despair when I see people walking their dogs on pavements in full sun.
Yes that is a problem, probably more so if your in hot countries. But the UK can be bad.

Same here we would never leave our dogs alone in any vehicle
I have done, to go to the shower block / toilet. With roof up, window vents open, windows open, but dogs inside with door locked shut for security...

We have a Golden Retriever and she finds it warm in van so bought one of these usb chiller fan. This isn’t the one we have as I couldn’t find the link but they are all very similar. We think they are great and also very quiet
