Insurers - who are you with?

But presumably they must cover that under their rules if you complete your trip in less than 36 hours. Since the vehicle will not have been left unattended for more than 36 hours you will have complied with their terms.

OR are they seriously saying that they will not cover the vehicle at all in respect of fire, theft or vandalism while the camper van is in any car park for any length of time since it is then being 'stored at a non-approved storage location' ?

As long as the vehicle is not unattended for more than 36 hours then it is covered. So one night away from it should generally be OK but two nights is not.

iii) will it be covered if I leave it unattended in a car-park overnight whilst I go on an overnight back-packing or canoeing trip?

Just got off telephone with Comfort and the above scenario would be covered as long as it less than 36 hours...I gave them the scenario of parking the Cali up overnight in a ferry car park whilst we travelled to some imaginery island which didn't allow vehicles and stayed overnight.

I really struggle with the idea of the 36 hour rule as I worry that we would forget a) to organise it and b) when our 36 hours are up (!)...both have brains like sieves  however they quoted £262 including commuting and business based on 8000 mile but no RAC cover.

I will read through the policy docs tonight - that'll be fun :headbang

The really odd thing about this 36 hour rule is how would they even know when you left the vehicle? Or are you expected to provide evidence of having been with the vehicle less than 36hrs before the incident !!?? :)

It would seem the policy is really geared to Large Motorhomes, ones that would rarely be used as a family, everyday vehicle. You would hardly drive to the airport for a trip to the States in your motorhome, but you would in a California if it was your family vehicle.
Passed a Farm on Tuesday that had a large gravelled area with row upon row of Large White Motorhomes parked up for the winter. Never seen such a facility full of Campervans.

Just for the record, just renewed. Currently with LV; tried Safeguard but they weren't able to offer business use (offered to transfer me elsewhere but left call at that point). LV was £334 full business use, 22k/annum, full no claims & no convictions, incl foreign use, courtesy car and no claims discount guarantee. Quite pleased with LV to deal with tho may cost a bit more than some are getting elsewhere.

Safeguard with all the trimmings offered best value for me

Very pleased to hear this Larkrise. I've been with LV for many years as most firms didn't like to insure two cars for business use. I also have maximum no claims with protected no claims bonus. The only issues when we have needed their help, when my wife was driven into, they came up trumps.
I've rung around a few companies in the last few weeks and they are not the cheapest, but they do what they say they will. You never know how good your insurers are, until you need them.

We go between Safeguard, Comfort and CC, we never stay with the same insurer at renewal as you always seem to get a better deal being a new customer, you dont seem to get anything for loyalty these days

Just renewed with comfort £281 - no RAC as we didn't need it. Not too bothered about the three day rule as when not in use van is stored on a gold site.

I just went with LV as none of the specialists could/would provide cover, or reluctanly came back with four-figure quotes, I wouldn't have thought to call them unless I'd read it here, I think from Matt.

One agent told me that Aviva won't now cover anything above £10K parked on the street overnight (which is my biggest premium factor).

Oops! sorry,Start again
We have signed up once again with the Camping and Caravan Club. £194 plus Legal expenses £21 (never sure if this is worth while, I'm trying to wean myself off it) and European breakdown £69 a total of £322 with insurance premium tax £27 and , guess what, a policy fee of £12!
Van Value £38000, 8000 miles max. so i am pretty happy with that.
Oh, I use the van everyday as my car and also i am a volunteer driver for our village Care Group which is covered as well.
Sorry about the the double post, Moderator the previous one can be removed.

By Aviva do you mean Comfort? I can confirm that they told me tha they would not quote if the vehicle is parked on the street.

That sounds like a very good deal. I'm with Comfort. The cost is a little higher and legal assist is mandatory. I find that very frustrating as I have a specialist legal assist policy which cover all cars and drivers in the household at a fraction of the cost.

One reason we didn't go to Comfort was that we use the Cali as a car and we have left it at airport parking places for periods of up to a fortnight and there was no cover after 36 hours as you say. (Cost came into it as well!)

Admiral, great deal as on a multi car policy to include my car as well. A quote from VW was ten times the price and another insurer refused because it was consider a conversion. I explained a California is factory built and they told me I was wrong and that all VW campers are van conversions. I suggested they contact VW but they declined

Your wish has been my command.

Also following "headgate", another avatar, sweetly entitled "the morning after" taken by my Sister this morning as I emerged for breakfast feeling not very well ....

I discussed the airport carpark issue with Comfort. The advisor was adamant that they will provide cover in a 'secure' airport car-park as long as they were advised in advance and that they would not levy an additional premium. It probably isn't an issue for me as I would use my car for such a run but I'd be interested as to whether anyone has actually done this with comfort.

Interesting. Having the cover is good but having to inform them is just more hassle.... and for what reason if they are going to provide cover anyway?
Feeling a bit grumpy tonight.!

Just insured my new T6 Ocean 204 4motion with Comfort £240 no discount when quoted online but still a good deal I think, pickup a week on Tuesday, can't wait.

Forgotten how time consuming gets different quotes for insurance. My head is buzzing.
Need insurance for new T6 Ocean 150 PS DSG. It will be my husband car,
So need social, domestic & commuting to place of work. In fact he cycles most days. Mileage no more than 10,000 miles per year. Still both work.
Wanted protected NCD , New for Old & European cover( no need for more than 90 days). Will have VW breakdown cover for 3 years. All quotes included legal cover.

The best quote was camping & caravaning club.

Camping & caravaning club
We are already members( costs £37 online )bringing/ using NCD( no claims discount),New for old "unlimited miles for 12 months included, second year "new for old "replacement of vehicle 10% of premium , third year "new for old" 20% of premium. Cost £270.68
Call advisor Tracy was polite .

Received quote documents today 17 th, unfortunately sent last year documents for a quote for a T5 demo we nearly bought last year . Really confused. Human error. They have reduced the new quote by £12 the policy fee.
Call advisor Hannah has been brilliant sorting out the correct docs.
Cost now £ 258.68 !!!!

Comfort
New for old for 3 yrs or 15,000 which is ever first.
They say the NCD 9+ is protected. Confused by other replies on here, saying not protected. Not worried about 36 hrs rule
Cost £306-11 ( Katie was the most helpful, pleasant of the advisors I spoke too).

Caravan Club
New for old for 24 mths unlimited miles. Protected NCD.
£312.86 + £48 membership joining fee( by direct debit)
Insurance advisor helpfully phoned me back rather than waiting in the phone queue .

Safeguard
With club discount was £400+ ,then reduced when I discussed other quotes to £344.44 .
Difficult to get a word in with this insurance advisor..

Forgot to add to the above we got extra discount with several of the insurers because have a rear camera & parking sensors.

I never mentioned parking sensors on my quote thanks for the tip. I think I pay around 330 at the moment fully comp so in the bright ball park.

we used zurich and they only have 5 days (if i remember correctly) of european cover and after that its extra charge (and it was well over £400 with 7 years no claims)

so we are looking for a company that offers at least 50 days, pref 90, european cover as standard. any ideas please?

Adrian Flux do 186 days EU cover. Breakdown is extra. I paid £305 for fully comp (AXA) on a 1992 T4 but only a couple of days ago, till I found this Forum. Will check out Comfort now, before my 14 days are up! CCC was no good as I recall - not enough time abroad. Also HIC do serious tripping - was designed for Aussie/Kiwis travelling through EU and UK on a year's trip but also do multi-trips of 60 days each time. HIC = Herts Insurance. They're associated with Adrian Flux.
Also Highway Victoria ( Liverpool Insurance ) quoted similar to Adrian Flux.
Bikes not included on either.
