Insurers - who are you with?

Be careful with Admiral. I just came off the phone with them and the quote ballooned to £315 once I listed all the optional extras that the vehicle has. Not worth the difference against the Comfort quote.

Looks like Comfort for me.

The best quote was camping & caravaning club.

Camping & caravaning club
We are already members( costs £37 online )bringing/ using NCD( no claims discount),New for old "unlimited miles for 12 months included, second year "new for old "replacement of vehicle 10% of premium , third year "new for old" 20% of premium. Cost £270.68
Call advisor Tracy was polite .
Just making my way down Calimeras useful list but....
I'm a 52 years old with full NCD wanting SDP + commuting.
I think they think I'm 18 and crashed yesterday with 12 points on license.

I was with Clubcare last year but price jumped this year so with LV= this time round.
Still can't go with Admiral as they don't insure the Ocean. (they don't insure any vehicle with running water apparently)

I hope you've not been driving your new California Bronze without insurance!?

BTW - if you have a job that means we'd have to be killed if you told us what it is, I'd recommend trying LV= with Boundless* membership discount. Works well for us as I had a job that I'd have it kill you if I told you what it was.

* or some other employee discount service you might have access to.

LV= for me as well. Best quote by about £100, SDP, Commuting and Business use, 18k miles pa, similar age, 10 years NCD, about £280. Includes 180 days Euro cover as standard. Their online quote is very straightforward to fill in. I actually got a better quote from Direct Line - 2/3 the price of LV=, but you have to inform them every time to go across the channel and you have to pay for a green card. If that's not an issue, their cover was pretty good, and they are especially good if you want to add occasional drivers. I had to get them to quote by phone as the only seem to have the T5 models on their online quote system. As below, I needed to be very specific about the vehicle description, but they were happy to cover the Ocean. Basically they said "if you turned it upside down and shook everything loose out, what is left is covered".

Admiral were happy to quote for me - my Disco is currently insured by them and they quoted for the change of cover to the Cali. I did find that you have to be very specific about the vehicle description: '2017 Volkswagen California T30 Ocean 4MOTION Tdi DSG' worked for most insurers. Their quote was pretty good, but they only include 90 days Euro cover.

Edit: added mileage.

We had a quote from Admiral that came out very good but then after some digging after reading a thread on here I found out that the habitation area was not covered and it would be a very grey area if a claim was put in. They released me from the policy with no penalty and I am now with Safeguard. I think you need to be very careful with the non specialist insurers.

We were with LV, very competitive £339 renewal (had declared modifications) but I was worried about the converted aspects being covered so I've swapped to a specialist scheme sold by A-Plan. More expensive but they cover the modifications better, I hope.

Yes, LV was another one that could not confirm one way or another if the habitation area was covered. I think the problem is you are speaking to a sales person on commission at these places and some will just tell you what you want to hear. I think because the California has motor caravan on the V5 you need to be very careful who you choose and I think specialist insurers are the way to go.

Caravan & Motorhome Club £390 with 20,000 miles/year, 270 days European Cover and if the vehicle is new then upto 2 years New for Old, and they KNOW what the California SE/Ocean is. No need for Tracker and no need to phone if left unattended for 48hrs or more as some insurers insist on.
Also I have had first hand experience of a write-off claim on a new caravan in the past and couldn't fault them.

We have all our vehicles with the NFU
Tried NFU for my cali back in 2012 but could not guarantee kitchen would be covered. They actually said as they insure horse boxes with kitchen it must be covered. Ho hum !
I will not even get quote from non specialist insurer for my cali.
Had a car insured with Admiral & was hit by 3rd party. Dealing with the claim was a real pain. I had to ring then every day & nag them to get it done. Never again.

Why couldn’t they check with the underwriters for you ?

and they KNOW what the California SE/Ocean is.

+1 for CMHC - As I have said before1st class support from them when rear ended in our 2012 SE. Supported VW bodyshop repair of over £6k while 3rd party fuffing around.

NFU for me, allow full business use, high miles etc probably expensive but no hassle & UK helpdesk.
I'm sure the kitchen is covered as its part of the vehicle but I haven't bothered checking.

Had only good experiences with NFU on claims.

We had a LR90 with rack and tent on roof, wife forgot it was on there and drove under a car park barrier. :-( They paid out for new roof, rack and the tent no questions asked.

I went with the Caravan and Motorhome Club £750 with 20,000 miles a year. They were the most expensive of the 5 companies I contacted but were the only company I felt comfortable with.

LV did not seem to know what a California was.

Caravan and Camping Club would only insure me for a max of 15,000 a year.

Comfort the 48hr rule was a problem. I got a different interpretation of this depending on which adviser I spoke to.

Safeguard seemed OK but the would not insure my Cali whilst it was parked at my holiday home in France even when I was there.

It should be found ok in their online quote system on the internet and their sales staff should be able to select it on their system. Hope this helps..

See other threads as to why they use T30 in the description and not T6 as might be expected.

Whilst I realise that every post code and every drivers credentials play a major part in the quotes I can't believe how wildly different they are coming in. For example post162 and 168 and my own experience in post 153.

Cheapest for me are Comfort, almost 2/3rds cheaper than C & C at £307. These particular policies dont vary that much as far as I can tell.
Safegaurd are £470 but include some thing I excluded with Comfort. There was no option to exclude with safegaurd and it is a more inclusive policy. When I'm properly up and running with european trips (next time around) I will take advantage of the extras and the 17% discount. Until then it looks like comfort for me.

Comfort for me when I took mine out and they did not up it when I renewed.

I would check on the “ No mileage limit “ clause. From what you have said if you exceed about 5,000 miles/ year in the first 3 years the “ New for Old “ is void.
When I enquired there was a mileage limit.
