Removing tray underneath wipers to access grommet in engine bay

I'm trying to run a cable from inside the cabin to the engine bay. I've read there's a grommet on the passenger side of the engine bay that you can push wires through from underneath the glovebox.

Thing is, the tray underneath the wipers is in the way of accessing this grommet (which is behind he battery). I can see only one accessible screw on the passenger side, but I'm guessing it's not just held in place by that. How do I remove this tray? Do I have to remove the wipers?!

Attaching a photo - thanks in advance to anybody who can help!

Remove Rubber Seal. The plastic Tray Grill is held firm by a number of plastic push-in plugs on the underside, so pulling it forward will release it, but to remove it fully the Wiper arms need to be removed.

If i remember correctly then there is just the one screw and the rubber trim at the top. Some did have a rubber grommet in the metal plate so i'd take of the battery cover first and have a quick look

If it's the same as the T5, there's a metal plate behind the battery - remove the battery, a screw or two for the plate and you have full access to the space and to the grommet through the bulkhead.

Thanks for the replies, I'll poke around over the weekend and see if I can get it sorted.

I looked for a grommet some time ago & could not find one. The roof drain hose comes out through the bulkhead behind the battery. Don't disturb this or you risk water going in to cab & soaking the carpets. I have been there !!

T5 (2005) Caravelle - photo of bulkhead grommet being battery, after removal of metal plate - the one with the red & yellow wires through. It was blank, but poked a hole through for the spilt charger and solar free I had on the old Caravelle.

I was trying to pass two cables from
Engine bay to cabin and came across these solutions.
Using the grommet behind the battery.
I removed the black plate and got access to this grommet but it seems to be a drain of some sort.
Could it be from the roof? I just do not to poke anything through and find later I get a leak
Any help would be great thanks

The grommet is your drain hole from roof.

Yes that is what it looked like so I would have to find another place or drill a hole myself ?

Why are you trying to run cables into the engine compartment. There are fuse boxes under the dashboard and under the front seat that you may be able to use.

Yes thanks, but I want to wire a switch in the cabin and the lights I have installed are on the outside

I believe there is a grommet , behind the battery , through the firewall into the cabin.

This is the grommet which has nothing going through it but I think it is a drain . This picture I found on google but it might be from a van without an opening top

Front roof drain outlet. A Transporter probably has a rubber plug/grommet there, not so on the California.

Yes that is what I thought, I shall have to carry on looking there must be a way without having to dismantle a lot of things. I recall having seen a diagram you posted saying item 12 and 17 I think it was, but I am sure this is the one I saw which is a drain.
I might have to drill a hole and fit a rubber grommet myself

Any help. Position of Body Bungs.

Thanks WelshGas, that was the diagram I had seen, the ones in 12 are the ones that are drains from the roof and the 17 is the one I could not find other than another drain type grommet that maybe from the Aircon

Hi Dell,

I am trying to do the same. And I have a rubber grommet with a narrow spout in the middle. Is this number 12 and do you have the same grommet? Now I was really wondering, what did you finally choose, how did you solve it? Hope you can help me out.

This is the water outlet from the roof drain.
Don't touch that. The only thing you could do is remove the flaps so the water can drain better.

Thanks for your help. Do you know if only california's have a roof drain here then? As other people have another type of grommet and they are drilling a small hole in it to pull the wires through. However, still unsure where to go from battery to cabin through the bulkhead. Perhaps through the larger square 'opening' next to it?

In the Diagram in Post 17, the grommets shown in Position 12 are for the roof drains - Not used on the Transporter Van. Position 17 are for the AirCon drains LHD or RHD I believe.
The California and Transporter share the same Body shell and Engine firewall.
I believe if you remove the engine battery , behind and below it you should see a large gauge red wire going from the fuse box below the battery through the the engine firewall to the split charge relay under the front drivers seat LHD, passenger seat RHD.

Is this (see attachment) the location you mean where the wire from the engine fuse box run through the firewall to the cabin? Looks like it ends up somewhere in the cabin fuse box, right? So, if we get it from there then I only have to get it along the back of the steering column (LHD) to reach the spot where I want to mount a switch just under the light switch. At least, that's the idea. Can you confirm?
