Roof unequal when lowering?

If you are in Cornwall, the only place is Carrs Exeter, all the other dealers in Cornwall and Devon will not have a clue and I would dread to think what they would end up doing.

Carrs have repaired many roofs and have a trained Cali technician.

Yes that's what I am concerned about Martin. How about Snows used to be Murrays in Plympton Devon?

Murrays were horrendous on the one and only occasion I used them and from what I hear quite a few of the staff have moved over to Snows. TBH, I would go the extra few miles to Exeter, when you ring up ask for Peter as he knows us at the club and will look after you.

Tried Carrs Exeter before I read your post. Booked up till late March. I told them I came to them first as they are reported to have a special Cali experienced technician. Lady on the phone said not really. Wished I had waited a few more minutes to see your reply re Peter.

Just had a chat with Snows who have taken over the VW Franchise including Cali's and are in a new building.
They can fit me in next week with courtesy vehicle. So I am going to give it a go. They have taken all the details re the problem and are considering pre ordering parts to fit.
So fingers crossed and I will update here when I have more to report.
I do appreciate your advice Martin and hope the new firm will come up to scratch.
Thank you

That is a shame about Carrs, it will be good to hear back about Snows in Plymouth though.. keep us updated :thumb

Would also been interested in the service you get in repairing your Cali.
Snows is the nearest dealer to us
Many thanks

They intimated that we had not opened a door / window, thus building up of air pressure inside the vehicle, which resulted in the problem. Every time we lower the roof now, we video it!
If that were the case the internal air pressure would be the same throughout the interior. Therefore how would it cause this problem?

Well dropped off our beloved Cali today at Snows. Everyone very helpful. The mechanics were all busy but I said I would prefer to talk to whoever was going to do the repair.

They said ok they would ask one of the mechanics to pop down and take a look with me. My main concern was that as a new firm doing Cali Campers they might not have come across the roof issue before.

I explained what the problem had been and what was done by the AA to get us home.
After chatting with the mechanic my confidence was lifted as the gentleman seemed to understand what the problem may be and he said he had a few similar jobs to do in the past. He also seemed fairly familiar with the roof hydraulics.

We were given a new T6 Combi Transporter to use and later today received a follow up call saying the parts to do the fix will arrive tomorrow with an update on Monday.

Will update as things move on.

Collected our beloved Cali today after dropping it in on Friday morning and receiving it back today Tuesday.
I will say the service was quick, efficient and courteous.
We raised the roof to check everything and I said I would prefer to leave it up for 15mins to see if it sagged. No problem we went in the dealership and were made a cup of coffee while we waited.
No sagging, so raised the roof and lowered it a couple of times and all seems ok. So we brought the Cali home.
Much relieved I just hope the problem does not come up again.
As it was taken in on a Friday and replacement parts had to be ordered I believe this was an excellent turn around considering a weekend had to be taken in.
So at this point I can only recommend Snows and would be more than happy to take my vehicle there for any other issues or a service.
Hope this is of help to anyone in the SW who is wondering where to take their Cali.

Hi James

I think the main part replaced was the passenger side Hydraulic arm or piston. Not certain if any other little bits were adjusted or changed as I only dealt with the lady on reception this time and did not have chance to chat with the mechanic.

I had the same problem several times (left and right). VW dealer told me they know the problem and that the two cilinders have to be replaced... Our California is 2,5 years old and VW will pay the materials and we the working hours (1,5 h)

If you van is still under warranty, why do you have to pay the labour.surely the cylinders are designed to last more than a year, and as you only put it up and down, you can't have done anything wrong yourself

On the Continent the warranty is only 2 years, in the UK it is 3 years - 2 years from VW and 1 year from Dealer, so I am led to believe.

Of interest, I wonder if any independents are starting to do this kind of work on Cali's. Anyone know? I get generally very good service at the dealers but surely an independent specialist could grab a niche market servicing and repairing the camper bits.
