Hi

Looking into Michelin cc2 for my ocean 235/55/17. Can anyone advise me if I need the XL versions or the SUV. I think they’re both 103 load rated, but which is the preferred / better for a Cali

Thanks

I would go for the reinforced tyres (XL).
The SUV tyres might be more comfortable, but you might face some faster outer tyre wear.
Maybe I am not the right person to answer, as I have the C tyres (van) which have very hard shoulders.
The main features are: speed and weight. All the rest is up to your personal preference. And only trial and error will show you what you need, instead of prefer.

The speed index must be at least the maximum speed your van is rated at. Mine is rated at 170km/h, so in theory I could go with speed rate "R". I now have speed rate "T" = 190km/h.
And I have 104/106 load rated tyres = 900kg for single wheel, 950 for dual wheels.

As my maximum axle weight is 1600kg at the rear (I have a towbar, so the maximum weight is upped with 25kg, making the 1575kg up to 1600kg), the maximum load on 1 tyre is 800kg. I could go as low as load index 100.
Best is to go for at least 235/55 R17 103H. XL is not obligatory, but I would prefer those.

Many thanks for your input.. I’m leaning towards the XL if they’re reinforced. I’ve read a few threads on here about side walls failing so reinforced is probably a safer option.

I’ve used 235/55/17/103/H Michelin CrossClimate SUV tyres, 4 sets over some 120,000 + miles on my 180 biturbo T5.1SE, all over Europe and particularly Scandinavia.
My vehicle was a 4Motion. I had virtually equal tyre wear Front to Rear R to L such that I never bothered swapping wheels around.
These tyres were replaced when they reached 3.5mm tread so I could have run them lower if I had wanted to but on a 3 ton van that’s all the road contact you have.

Michelin no longer do the CrossClimate SUV tyre in 235/55/17 so last October I replaced my 235/55/17/103/H Michelin CrossClimate SUV tyres after 30k miles on my California that had even wear and 3.0mm left and great performance for the newer 235/55/17 Michelin CrossClimate 2 XL 103Y and got money off with the 4 tyre Michelin deal! The newer CrossClimate 2 have a better rolling resistance than the old SUV but both are XL rated and perform great on my California 4Motion.

I've been driving, mostly on good roads, on my Michelin CC2 235/55 R17 103Y XL tires for nearly 3 years and 38000 Km. I drive into the mountains every weekend over the ski season but haven't done anything extreme like driving in Scandinavia. I'm pretty sure just looking at the profile that they wouldn't be good on sand or mud, but for my driving I'm happy with them and would get the same again.
