Taking a dog to Spain?

As we know, France is very dog friendly where you can take them in shops, restaurants etc. We are however looking to have a break from France this year and considering Spain with our pooch and was wondering how dogs are welcomed there? If SpIn is no good, any other options?

Is this something new? We have just got back from Brittany for half term and no problems taking our dog into restaurants at all.

Well in the area of France we live, near Bergerac they no longer allow dogs in shops, restaurants (which is a good thing), unless it is a guide dog. Now whether this applies to the rest of France I don't know.

We have a dog (cocker spaniel) and find that there are plenty of bars and even some restaurants where he is allowed here in Spain. On the other hand, he is very quiet, basically just like a doormat under the table waiting for gravity to rain down edibles. Shops are a different matter. We generally ask and about a third are ok with it. Strangely, he is allowed in the local bread shop.

Ok, jockes aside, Spain is not different to other countries, dogs are always welcome, but there are many private bussineses which preffer them outside. Good thing is that the weather is usually good enought to enjoy alfresco when inside are not allowed.... many terraces.

We took ours to the north coast of Spain last year and had no major issues. All campsites seemed dog-friendly, as did many businesses. Most of the restaurants preferred us to sit outside with him, and some of the shops indicated that he wasn't welcome, but it was never a problem for us.

We had issues on one (very popular) beach, but that was only because it was heavily patrolled by lifeguards due to a strong rip. On the other 5-6 beaches we just kept him on a 5-10m loop/peg and he was fine.

Oh yes!! In most of the beaches dogs are forbiden for health reasons: You don't want to lay down, or put your kids to play with sand where a dog previouly pissed, it's very risky. There are some beaches in where dogs are allowed, but obiously they are usually not the most popular.
