Tourist tax in Wales

Like they stay away from Barcelona, Amsterdam, Munich, Lisbon, Baleares, etc? All places that have had tourist tax in place for years. In Barcelona it costs between 1 to 5€/day, max 10 days. The 5€ rate applies to eg 5-star hotels, so I doubt the clientele will struggle to afford it.

And don’t forget the tax is Per Person Per day. Personally I have no problem with Councils from whichever country charging a Tourist Tax. If I want to go to a certain place I’m not going to let that stop me going there.
Likewise if they do legislate for a Tourist Tax in Wales I will be 100% behind it.
My Wife is Welsh as are my children and Grandchildren. I'm not Welsh but I have been living here for 43 years and this is my home and the country I love .

I left Wales when I was 18 to go to collage and now live in the south east. I feel very patriotic towards Wales, I love going back…. It’s just so difficult to get in. The last 5 years I have noticed when going back which I need to do to visit the folks is that no sooner do you get over the bridge you are queuing to go through the Bryn Glas tunnel in Newport. It’s not going to be a small percentage tax that prevents people visiting. It’s the time it takes to get past Newport. I lament the decision they made not to do anything about it. It’s a real shame.

nah bit older than that… 45 now (I think, sometimes loose track as it changes each year)

We are actually gonna try the train next time we visit my parents. 2 adults 2 kids and dog. It’s takes so long in recent years to get to south wales from east London by Car and it’s very expensive with the price of fuel.

Another reason for the holdups is many people commuting to work and either early morning or evening problems but that’s being going on for 20 odd years. Plus nearly everywhere is a 50 limit add on to that the constant roadworks and you get the perfect storm. One thing that makes me laugh is the sign as you pass Port Talbot steelworks to slow down to 50 to prevent air pollution. Port Talbot is one of the most polluted places in Wales probably in the UK .

Do you mean to say that “Guff” is not debated by English politicians? At the moment we are on a Spanish campsite near Tarragona where their council make a Tourist tax charge of 3%. A French campsite we were on in La Flèche charged 4%..This varies from area to area. Some make a charge others don’t. Many many councils in many countries make a charge for tourism. The money gets put back into the local communities. Nobody is forcing anyone visiting countries that make a charge for tourism. Does it deter me from visiting Spain or France because they make a 3% or 4% charge for tourism. No.
The British government make a charge if you fly internationally known as air passenger duty, does that deter people from going on holiday on a plane. Again No.

Tourism tax in Wales: Levy could apply to Welsh holidaying in Wales

People from Wales could be charged the levy, with it also applying to campsites under the plans.

Wales, once again, making everyone feel welcome.

I toyed with buying a house in Wales. It was then I became aware how insular and unfriendly they actually are to English people. So very unhealthy in my opinion. I gave up on the idea but might visit in my 6.1 but Ireland seems more friendly.

Totally. Bet your prospective neighbours were glad you didn’t move in next door. On the contrary, I visited the North in August and found the usual mix of people - but overwhelmingly friendly. Possibly the worst dealings we had with anyone were with a campsite owner who in fact was English.

Definitely going back there. Top tip: learn a bit of Welsh and take that chip off your shoulder. You wouldn’t go over to France with that attitude, would you?

Estate Agents are a peculiar set.

You have to remember that they will only say what they think you want to hear.

To judge a nation by its estate agents would be like judging a person by their eye colour.

I have no chip but welsh estate agents are welsh. Not straightforward or helpful. But I only met one.

So going from the total Welsh population being unfriendly and insular to Welsh estate agents seems to be backtracking a bit far. I have lived in Wales for 43 years. My wife is Welsh so are my Children and Grandchildren. My in-laws who were Welsh through and through were the nicest people you could ever wish to meet.
Thank goodness you didn’t come and live in this beautiful country.

50p or €1 coin in London Tube stations. I recently needed a pee and had neither coin in my pocket. Had to crawl in and back out under the turnstile barrier.

BTW the £ to € exchange rate they use is a bit odd. Or maybe European bladders are twice the size?

Still, it was worth it. Those childhood holidays on the Gower were fantastic. Especially with a Joe’s Ice Cream at the end of the day.

Thats the same person thats got upset when someone suggests that less than 100% of Welsh people are friendly & welcoming.

I think Not the Nine O'clock news got it right when they did "Come home to a real fire, buy a cottage in Wales"

As a Welsh speaking grandson of a Welsh miner, I think it would be fair to say that as in all parts of the UK some people are more welcoming than others. As to whether Wales or Ireland are the most friendly, I've only been shot at in Ireland, so Wales gets my vote.

The old route (pre Severn Bridge) took us along the A40 from Uxbridge through most town centres on route. Then after Gloucester it was a slog through Newport, Cardiff and Port Talbot eventually arriving at Pontarddulais. I seem to remember it taking 10 hours once in my Dad’s old Morris 10.
Still, it was worth it. Those childhood holidays on the Gower were fantastic. Especially with a Joe’s Ice Cream at the end of the day.

10 hours to get to the Bont had to be worth it.
