Which electric bike shall I buy?

@Moakesy
Ive tried to explain, the world is not flat and wherever we cycle, we will encounter hills...

That statement reminds me of a trip to Norfolk, where I found it wasn’t as flat as I thought it was!!

Got a very, very good cyclist buddy who’s glory days are behind him but still very good. After abandoning bike rides with his wife (as she felt under pressure to keep up) she got an electric bike and they now love going out together.

She has gotten fitter as a result (with the advantage that the battery now lasts longer) and she has decided to cycle to work every day rather than take the car.

whatever bike you decide on, I hope it works out the same and you have a similar experience. Good luck!!

So then...
The Powerfly 5 came home with us.
It’s so so so much fun, I secretly want one. The initial acceleration and easy of riding this thing is very addictive.

First time I saw her genuinely smiling whilst riding a bicycle...

Love it.....will be interested to hear how your wife gets on with it after a few days. Especially if you find the two of you want to go out together more.

We have a couple of e-bikes. I went for the VanMoof S2 electric - they’ve released an S3 this week and reduced the price significantly v the previous model. Not great for off road but will do tow paths and gravel ok. Comes in at 19kg so fine for the rear rack. vanmoof has lots of city tech - a built in locking mechanism and alarm (supposed to be hard to steal). Finish on the bike is great and think the battery is 450wh so can cover some distance. Oh and it has a boost button on the handlebars which is fun at traffic lights. In terms of top speed you can set it to US mode in the app which means it can do 20mph.

The wife has a cannondale treadwell Neo which is lighter around 16kg. Really nice finish In metallic khaki with battery built into the frame. Think if I had to do it again I would go for the cannondale as think it’s a better all rounder - tires are good off and on road and it’s probably faster. The 250wh battery ebikemotion setup works great even on steep hills especially with the 9 gears.

@Prycey13 i saw a Vanmoof in Holland last year and was well impressed. Looks very decent.
Would make a great commuting bike...

My local bike shop said his business is doing very well over the last few weeks. Loads of people after bikes and all his sub £500 stock has been snapped up. He has stock on the way, but loads of follows with people looking for bikes.
It’s great, I hope it continues and more people get into biking...

Seeing so much new lycra around at present, lovely to see. Also lots of new trainers, my regular running route along the beach greensward is getting a groove worn in it. I think it's brilliant. People taking care of themselves.

Perhaps some positives to take from all this.
Milan has some ambitious plans post C19...

So then, @soulstyledevon .....what is the verdict on this now it’s been a few weeks? :)

Absolutely loves it.
Genuinely, she’s smiling whilst riding...;)
A 26km route before e-purchase was taking her 1hr 40 mins.
We managed to complete it on her e-bike last Sunday and me carrying my 4 year old on my conventional bike in 1hr 10mins.

Therefore much quicker and she still feels like she had a decent workout.

Wish we had bought it sooner...:thumb

Glad to hear that. Sounds like a win/win for you both.

So what happens when you’re doing that route slower than your wife? :D:D

It’s getting a bit annoying when she turbos the hills and I have 3 stone plus over the rear wheel...
But i take her on the flat and downhill sections...;)

You could get a fold up Brompton with an aftermarket electric kit for that budget, giving you the best of many worlds!

Gone Vanmoof X3 with front carrier, I know it’s crazy given I race bikes at elite level but I’d rather commute at a cruise and just see it as swapping the tube out for a bike, I do the hard yards elsewhere but these new ebikes sucked me in

Ive got a bit of bike envy at the moment...
Ebikes are great for light touring and commuting.
I rode over to Coventry today to drop a present off and would have liked a less sweaty ride...

Yeah I'm towing H around in his Thule all the time now, so thought sod it, it a nice way to make easy progress and not get in the way of my training, which should be either really easy or really hard.

You think they could build a cycle path alongside it.
Nah, apparently to expensive.
Whats another billion in the grand scheme...

Magical moving budgets.
They started at £36b now in excess of £100b...
That’s a big increase in 10 years, with another 10 years to run...
Hmmm

I know this question has been asked before but since then technology has improved, new brands are on the market and prices have come down.

I have £1,500-£2,000 to spend on a E Bike , ideally looking for something that I can use on both the road and tracks, there looks to be some good deals around on 2019 models at moment but I have no idea where to start
Moustache make sublime e bikes. By a second hand one or new you won't regret.

What a fascinating thread.

It has just become very pertinent for me. Between 1990 and 1995 I walked Lands-end to John O'Groats and twice more the other way round to raise money for a disabled kids charity. My companion on two of those occasions was Jo, the sister I now share house, dog, caravan and Cali with. She always wanted to complete it with the widest East to West in England and Wales, ... Lowestoft ness to St David's head.

Sadly Jo is now suffering with arthritis. Before it's too late I want to help her do it.. She will no longer be able to walk it but cycling it with an E bike sounds a perfect solution. So I am now looking for a Hybrid E bike, comfortable ride is paramount, good for a 400 mile trip, leisurely trip, using Cali and Caravan as a rolling base camp.

Without knowing the amount of movement, it’s a little difficult to know where to start.

Here is a list of potential bikes from Trek (I am a big fan of their bikes). Maybe the Dual Sport or one of the Verve range may be suitable if she prefers a step-thru frame. Or the mountain bike SoulStyleDevpon went for?

Indication of budget and style may help narrow things down a bit.

EDIT: OK, that link didn’t work the way I wanted. Filter by gender to narrow it down a bit.

I read earlier your comments regarding Trek so I've had a look at the pwerfly :)

Hi Granny Gen, I have utter belief that Moustache are the best e bikes you can put your money on. I was smashed off my Whyte 46 between 40-50 miles an hour. Major trauma 6 years ago, broken neck, ba k multiple breaks in leg nerve damage to rt side, tbi, etc you get the gist. Well I got back to cycling in ernest after 6years Jan this year . Moustache has played a significant part in my rehab, the geometry is second to none, powered by Bosch cx its formidable. Aestheticly it looks like a French resistance bike, indeed Moustache are made in France. Now to get your hands on one during lockdown is going to be tough as the factory was in shut down as was most of French non essential industry. So second hand look out for one possible, but beg steel or borrow a Moustache they leave others in there wake.

Thank you.

This is going to be a long term project, 2021 at the very earliest, probably 2022 but another to look for.
