my experience exactly!
and VW are telling me only 3% of Calis need this...HA!
It sounds like they are swamped to me.

Not really an issue as they are going to have to repair whatever corrosion there is. If it get's worse over this extended period then they will have more to repair. The roof works and I can still use the van without any problem which is the important thing. The whole thing is a bit stupid though. The dealer agreed.

I took my van in for its first MOT last month and got told about this roof recall. They did the tape thing but found corrosion and said it would need to be booked into the bodyshop to be fixed. I have just been told that VW now require this work carried out by an external company they have nominated who have such a backlog of work that it will likely not be until next year before I get an appointment!

I also need to take the van back to the dealer for photos to be taken of the corrosion. Apparently VW now require to see these before they will authorise the work to be carried out.
Is there any formal /written notification from VW on this?

Just had the tape fitted.......no corrosion...woopee
But ....they tore the rubber seal at one cornerCA29C611-1D8B-41C4-92CE-9A58752B6575.jpeg
I’ve let them know,,,,,,awaiting a reply...should I worry??

It’s so annoying,,,,,they can’t have missed that they did it....
This is what I got back after tape was applied. Sent pic to dealer and after chasing, they agreed to replace the seal.
They described doing it as a real “pig’ of a job! Their words not mine.

Hahaha a real pig of a job is just pick myself up off of the floor. It’s an absolute doddle of a job to do if no paint is required it takes an hour to inspect clean and tape. Refitting a old seal is easy as it’s already shaped to your roof that is just poor workmanship. And looking at the state of it should have been replaced under the recall anyway.

Hope you’re okay after your fall:thumb
Interestingly, this is one of the dealers that gets rave reviews on the forum

I’ve just about managed to pick myself back up :Dwho ever did that should be ashamed of themselves. :headbang

Probably the Apprentice.

First time Cleaning the roof seal today on an 18 plate Cali Beach, the tape has been applied to three sides of the roof. (Not the front edge)
On close inspection of one of the rear corners it is evident the ferrous metal frame of the seal is rusting and breaking through the thin rubber moulding quite high up on the seal, where the remedial tape does not extend to!
I intend to contact VW service department to arrange for a new seal to be fitted.

Whilst the seal was off I applied a small additional strip of helicopter tape to prevent the rust patch making contact with the painted roof panel and causing the dreaded roof rot.

Has the roof been up and down a lot in its short life... To account for that type of wear? I suspect the alignment of the roof is causing rubbing??

Don't think movement/up-down would rapid the corrosion .
By the looks of the green mold on the pics i guess the Cali sits outside at all time(@Perfectos ) ?
Meaning the water in the rubber all the time....

I'm on about the 3rd and 4th photo where is shows the seal has disintegrated.

Guess all seals look that way , in the corners one need to bend the metal structure in the seal when fitting.

The Cali is outside year round, as I suppose many many are, including at dealers, the general dirt that has worked in below the top edge of the seal is what looks green, not in fact green but brown ( first photo shows it better) as would be expected when general muck works its way into an enclosed space. ( similar to behind the rear light clusters etc, or anywhere that cannot be directly cleaned during a normal cleaning and polishing regime.
I wouldn’t expect a weather seal to fail this prematurely, regardless, after all its a proprietary weather seal on a vehicle.
I posted to highlight the potential with a relatively new seal and highlight the early failure so others may be aware, not to wait, and take appropriate action to prevent the ferrous part of the seal making contact with the painted aluminium, which is the known cause of the bi- metallic issues with the roof so many have experienced.
There is no sign of the dreaded rot, but I have no doubt if left to it’s own devises the seal would cause an issue with the roof in time, resulting in a long repair wait and a time without the van.

To add to the above the seal on the affected rear corner has never sat exactly flush with the curvature of the roof, the front edge on one side sits slightly differently to the other side, which makes me think the remedial tape has been applied post factory , which may have resulted in the seal being refitted poorly after the tape was applied ?

Hi John,
Helicopter tape is a clear tape produced by 3m, used in the aviation industry, it is literally applied to the leading edge of helicopter rotor blades, it prevents wear to the leading edge.
It is very tough as you would imagine, it can be shaped by using a light heat, it then become very pliable.
Another use is for bike protection tape, protects frame etc from scapes.
I got a whole roll on flea bay for about £30 which is exceptional value when compared to buying small quantities, such as bike kits etc.
It can be used to provide protection to sills etc, a similar product is used on the rear wheel arch protection of your van. The list of uses is endless.

I’ll see if I can find the seller info on flea bay ( I posted previously in another thread)

Thanks for quick reply

Hi John, the seller I bought from (whole roll of 100mm wide £24) does not appear to have any listings. You can buy small sections, from other sellers, but is expensive.

I’d be interested in getting a roll to protect Doris’s paintwork, assume after paintwork is cleaned, polished etc simply apply with a help of a hair dryer ?
