Step removed

It looks great without the shining step! I'm considering removing the step as well. Do you have a picture of what it looks like from underneath? Did you have to make any adjustments when removing the step? For example, what about the cables leading to the step?

From the side under the sliding door there is 6 bolts. I should probably put the bolts back in. Then underneath the cable can easily be wrapped and tied, and a further 3 brackets unbolted. it literally took 15 min to remove.
We never used the step from day one.

I had VW remove it and bin it. All up they charged £47

I'd roll underneath with spanners etc. and spend the £47 elsewhere. But there again I've built five campers so a bit of work underneath even for a 73 year old doesn't daunt me.

Would it not have been best to remove it your self and keep it. Maybe for resale reasons?

Hello,

I thought I read somewhere that something has to be changed at the controller also, because the camper will report an error when the step is "just gone". For that reason I would prefer that VW would look after this.

But I am a bit jealous because whatever I ask my VW dealer to do, which is outside standard VW repair work, he refused and say "... they can't do it...".

Regards,
Eberhard

Not sure about the controller, all in all it took 30 min to do but the step was removed in 15min. So perhaps something else was done. Either way though I have no errors appearing and everything works as normal.

Hello Everybody,

I am bringing back this thread with a question to those who have removed the THULE step: After doing so, have you encountered any issue like a quick battery discharge?

I have removed the step from my 2024 GC600 right after getting the van from the dealership. Soon I have noticed that if the vehicle was not used for more than 3-4 weeks, it completely drain both batteries, to the point when you have to unlock the vehicle's doors mechanically (battery completely drained out, not even the key fob works anymore)

At first I have suspected issues related with vehicle's many ecu's and controllers, so I brought the vehicle right back at the dealership. In my country the VW dealers do not sell too many GC's, so their tech knowledge related with the camper part is limited. But they escalated the technical issue to the factory tech-support, so they made an online diagnosis together with the factory tech-support. The answer was that the discharge is related to an issue of the THULE step (the factory didn't knew the step was removed, so they asked the local technician to check if the step was damaged in any way)

To make the long story short, I have reinstalled the step and the discharge problem was gone. But still I would like to uninstall this step (for me it only creates tons of problems)
The VW dealer cannot "undone" the step, so they do not have a procedure to remove this as it was never installed from factory. Of course, it can be removed mechanically and this is a 15' work, but this leads to the electrical issue.

This step is not an optional that you can order (same way as you can order the awning for example), so wether you like it or not, it's there.

So, what to do? Are there similar experiences around here?
Thanks!
