Coronavirus Impact

Personal protective equipment needed to protect against coronavirus infection is currently available on the international market through several channels. In addition, the possibility of launching the production of some protective supplies in Finland is currently being explored.

Finland will as soon as possible join the Joint Procurement Agreement to procure medical countermeasures, an agreement concluded between the EU Member States and the European Commission. The agreement is a means of implementing joint procurement of equipment, active pharmaceutical ingredients and other medical countermeasures of the Member States that are parties to the agreement.

Quick off the starting blocks aren’t they.

They seem to be operating at the speed of the EU, which recently sincerely apologised to Italy for not reacting faster, after they requested help.
All the EU states seem to be operating independently in their response to this pandemic.

I see one of the high ups in the Finnish government resigned after spending 4 million euros on ppe from abroad only to find that it was not of a sufficient medical standard and had to be binned. I reckon quite a few managers in the uk may need to follow that example

No, you roll the stock over to active use and replenish the back up, the military do it all the time
So why hasn’t it worked with this Pandemic. Because there wasn’t enough stock to meet the demand.

It sounds like he was panic buying...

Lounema admitted Thursday that he had ordered the masks from Onni Sarmaste, a payday lender, and Tina Jylha, a reality TV celebrity, rather than from the Chinese government

Thanks for the confirming info. The WHO guidance clearly states that a contagious person should be wearing a mask, and the Webasto study was a turning point in research because it showed that nobody knows who is highly contagious and who isn't unless they've been tested.

They are not set up as a pan national health service, the EU isn't perfect but cooperation beats confrontation anyday,
Didn‘t notice much co-operation in the first few weeks, in fact leadership from Brussels was overwhelming by the Silence.

I appreciate Health Care is upto the individual states, but advice , or closing the Schengen Borders could have been done much earlier as could financial proposals put forward, but instead silence . In fact the co-operation that did take place was from State to State on individual basis without any input from the EU President or Parliament.

Maybe the Finnish will sell the out of date stored PPE that they have

Would you prefer that the EU acted more like a Government and less like a club?

Just more like the Leaders they make out they are supposed to be.

It does show you the sort of people in charge at NHS Trust Headquarters, that a Trust Chairman phones the BBC for the phone number of Burberry..
And the BBC posts a correction.

And for anyone who didn’t see it. Very few.

Timeless... with a yorkshire grandfather (rest his soul) who "built his steel business from nowt" I can totally relate to this...

I've always had high regard for Japanese efficiency and how they have dealt with Covid19 up to now. but like most countries around the world, it is starting to place a massive strain, not only on their health system, but their PPE stocks.
In Osaka that are asking citizens for plastic raincoats! because they have run out of suitable protection.

They are also turning people away from the hospitals because they can't cope.

So whilst we can denigrate the UK for failing to prepare for this unprecedented disaster, please remember we are not the only ones, that its caught out.
Hopefully we will learn from all the mistakes we have made and will make in the future!

Cities with worst air pollution have bigger coronavirus outbreaks, say scientists
Fatalities of people with Covid-19 followed the same trend as higher levels of pollution in London, the Midlands and the North West

Higher air pollution has been linked to coronavirus as a study by Cambridge University says cities with the worst air have bigger outbreaks of cases.
An analysis by the Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit compared regional data on total Covid-19 cases and deaths, against levels of three major air pollutants.
The study used data from seven regions in England, where a minimum of 2,000 infections and 200 deaths are reported from February to April 8, 2020, and air pollution records from more than 120 sites in 2018 and 2019.
Levels of pollutants nitrogen dioxide and nitrogen oxide, much of which comes from traffic fumes, were highest in London, the Midlands and the North West and lowest in southern regions of England.
Fatalities of people with the coronavirus, known as Sars-CoV-2, followed the same trend, the study found, suggesting the higher the pollution levels, the greater number of Covid-19 cases and deaths.

The researchers said their study provided evidence that higher levels of some air pollutants correlate with increased Covid-19 mortality and spread in England.
Though most people with the virus have a mild illness, some patients go on to develop severe respiratory conditions, and scientists are trying to work out why some sufferers are more at risk of a serious response than others.
Previous studies have pointed to a higher risk for older people or those with underlying health conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and cancer.
Long-term exposure to air pollutants from car exhaust fumes or burning fossil fuels can put people at risk of these health conditions, and can also increase the risk of infection by viruses that affect people's airways.
Marco Travaglio, a PhD student at the MRC Toxicology Unit, said: "Our results provide the first evidence that Sars-CoV-2 case fatality is associated with increased nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide levels in England.

"London, the Midlands and the North West show the largest concentration of these air pollutants, with southern regions displaying the lowest levels in the country, and the number of Covid-19 deaths follows a similar trend."
The researchers say that their findings, which have not yet been peer reviewed, only show a correlation between dirty air and more severe Covid-19 disease.
Further research is needed to confirm that air pollution makes Covid-19 worse, but it does chime with findings from other parts of the world including northern Italy and the United States.
Dr Miguel Martins, senior author on the study, added: "Our study adds to growing evidence from Northern Italy and the USA that high levels of air pollution are linked to deadlier cases of Covid-19.
"This is something we saw during the previous Sars outbreak back in 2003, where long-term exposure to air pollutants had a detrimental effect on the prognosis of Sars patients in China.
"This highlights the importance of reducing air pollution for the protection of human health, both in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond."
