Custom build - 2020 Westfalia Club Joker 4Motion - Offroad build thread

The lime green top of these batteries is disturbing my OCD. So tempted to tape these off and spray the top satin black.

Just slide the seat back dude and ignore it ;)

I have 2 cans of Wurth Satin Black spray paint on hand. Same stuff I use to touch up the black bits around the van when needed (front grill, swing away rack, rock sliders, airline rails, etc)

Sanity restored. Just needs to dry

I work from my van 4-5 days a week and need power. But yes, I also prefer wild camping without EHU!

In addition to loving your Mad Max European off grid campervan, I’m very intruiged by what work you do from it?

Clearly lucrative to fund such a monumental build!

Next time (not that there will be one) you should use plasti-dip or similar. You can get it on Amazon. You spray it on, and then if needed it just peels off in one go later. Warranty saved!

Actually no issue with warranty. He and I joke all the time. In Switzerland all “mods” have to be proven to have caused any defect or issue for the warranty to be void. It’s easy to argue that painting the top of a battery did not cause battery cell issues if they arise.

That would be like voiding the warranty of the VW engine when some of us paint the front grill black to remove chrome.

It just needs a composting loo and then you have a perfect set up, I was wondering if that built in chem could be adapted when I had a joker.
Never really thought about that, but I'm quite ok with the existing one. And there comes a point where you need to put a stake in the ground and say "build done". Took me 2 years to get this far and now it's time to enjoy the van and plan some nice wild adventures! 3 already planned this year:

- Tuscany, Italy: Trip with the wife and daughters for 2 weeks but at a beach where I can do some surfing
- Sion, Switzerland: 2 weeks at TCS Camping Sion so I can surf at Alaia Bay wave garden/pool
- Peniche, Portugal: 2 weeks in Autumn so I can surf SuperTubos and watch the competition

Hope you are enjoying your build. It's looking great!

Cracking van!
I’ve just managed 12 nights off grid in mine around Scotland, not as refined as my joker.
My pull out roof bed needs improving and can’t wait to get a skylight in.

Done forgot to post some pics of your adventures.

Here’s some photos. That long cable on the right is for the Dometic CFX12. Ignore that.

Following on from an earlier post, this is where i put my quad-lock wireless phone charger, in case anyone is interested. The systems is great. Solid, charges without ignition, just drop the phone on and its good to go. (i used a brodit pro-clip and attached the quadlock wirless charger to it. had to drill one hole in it)

Looks great! The main issue I have with chargers in front of vents is heat. Wireless already creates heat and I found that with these cases and wireless the extra heat from the vents can out the iPhone into “overheating, please wait for iPhone to cool down”. Yes, you can close the vent for that location but it doesn’t block the heat completely. Keep an eye out for that.

I keep an eye out for that, but it's not been an issue so far. i quite like the fact i can keep my phone cool in summer in fact.

And to be clear we put the tape on the awning and then quickly mounted it before it expanded. It typically takes up to a few hours to fully expand and don’t do it when it’s raining.

Thanks. I'm guessing the awning is by Thule but can find no markings beyond Westfalia.
Also not clear to me how to remove it. 6 screws on the underside of 3 brackets but presumably one has to take of one end cap to slide it out? Or am I missing something obvious?
And for 90k, packing behind it would have seemed a reasonable thing to do?
Perhaps it comes as standard on the 104k versions? ;)

Yes it’s a Thule. It’s mounted by the dealer prior to delivery. It’s quite easy to do but you’ll definitely need two people! Simply remove those screws and it will be on the brackets which are like hangers. Then with one person on each side lift up and tilt the bottom out first then lift higher and pull away. No need to remove end caps.

Wish I could get cool air from outside out of my vents I could on t6 the t6.1 seems to only do hot unless ac is on:headbang

Thats great, have just ordered the magnets for the awning. Would you have a link / photo of the tape type?
I've afixed the expanding foam tape between the awning mounts and it does a good job of channeling the rainwater to drop at the mounts. An improvement but still leads to soaking the step at the point of the middle mount. I can't see an obvious way around this? Other than adding a Thule sealing rubber which seems a bit belt and braces.

I only have a few drops that leak through there. Definitely no soaking. I thought about filling it with some caulking but decided against it. Don’t want water pooling up inside either.

If it’s just been fixed give it some time in the sun to fully expand. It needs some dry heat to settle in.
