I agree. The trouble is that if by travelling abroad someone picks up covid, the "each" probably won't be keeping it to "their own".

More chance of picking it up at home than abroad, Uk infection rates are higher than France Spain etc

I can perfectly understand those countries not letting us in, but there is no logic for Uk not letting us back.

No logic to being able to have 120000 people at Silverstone, 60000+ at Wembley, night clubs open from Monday, but not allowed to sit on a socially distanced beach 21 miles away.

As I understand it, one of the issues is that the Beta variant is much more prevalent in France than in the UK and that it may be more transmissible and resistant to vaccine protection. If that is true, then the decision to move France to the Red List has some justification.
It’s incredibly annoying for all of us that the rules change so suddenly, but the behaviour of the virus does exactly the same, so surely there has to be a response. Some will agree with the response and some won’t.
I know many will disagree but I personally think that the relaxing of restrictions here in the UK is too much, too soon. Mass gatherings seem crazy to me! Don’t the rapidly increasing numbers tell us that?
Our decision earlier this year not to stress about foreign travel in 2021 was, in our case, the right one. Unfortunately, it’s looking increasingly likely that 2022 will follow suit.

Listening to how many people have contracted Covid from going to Wembley Euro final I’m not surprised about anything. As far as we are concerned our 2020-2021 Brittany ferry booking was wisely moved to 2022 at the beginning of the year. All our travel now will be in our beautiful Welsh coast and countryside. Anywhere else is just far too risky.

True. We have not seen our son and partner for 18 months either and I doubt we will see them this side of 24 months. Individuals have to make their own decisions regarding personal health, collective health of the nation and family priorities. One person's priority set may well be different from another.

Hi @Loodle, yes it’s difficult to get to the definitive truth these days and whether political motives are at play but it doesn’t change the fact that the ever changing situation makes planning international travel a nightmare. For us it’s just not worth the hassle. Would love to be in France right now but happy to explore more of the UK.

Was at dinner on Wednesday with a friend who has both a house and business in Normandy and he was planning to travel over today because the business has just reopened after being mothballed for 18 months.
Not travelling now!! He’s gutted.

Crazy lifting all the restrictions right now. I’d rather keep the smaller restrictions in place if it meant we keep the numbers down and can therefore travel. Friend is a doctor at a big London hospital. They’re seeing plenty of admissions of older people who’ve had both jabs. Another friend has COVID-19 since going to the Wembley final. Reckons he caught it from the person without a ticket who squeezed in next to him and was all over him because he was ‘off his face’.

Feels like playing Russian roulette having the children at school for one more week and holiday booked for Friday - will we get pinged or catch it (again) before then?
I think millions will be deleting the nhs COVID-19 app or turning off Bluetooth.

From the info by Medical experts it seems that the Beta variant is the most concerning due to it being more likely to be unaffected by the current Vaccines which is why, apparently, the UK Government is making strict controls on any Country that may transfer it into the UK.

Delta although spreading rapidly seems to be less 'Lethal' but even that is producing a 46% fatality rate to Hospital admissions.

Yes, that seems to be the case. My point was that cases of Beta relative to France are on an island in the Indian ocean, many thousands of miles from Europe. I cannot see why or how that would affect the UK.

I think that so long as the NHS isn’t overwhelmed the idea is to allow the virus to spread and thereby boost future immunity. The big gamble is allowing it to spread risks a resistant variant causing hospitalisations and deaths to rise to intolerable levels.

Seems that the % of Beta cases in France is high enough to trigger the UK into restrictions applying.

All a bit confusing to most people with the UK having ALL Covid controls seemingly abandoned on the 19th July but tightening up of Border Covid controls.

My 5th attempt to go to France will now be changed to a 6th which may well be in 2022.

From what I am reading is, what is the official view of acceptable death rate in the community In relation to the pandemic as a %. In reality without comparison to the average it’s a pretty irrelevant stat thats in the papers in reference to Cause being covid or not. Sadly you can’t eliminate death.
Can the govt stop deaths from covid? Not at the minute. But thats the same for a lot of other causes.

But on the thread, it’s a bit annoying as it’s now easier to actually get to France now with no PCR test required for some, just harder getting home.
Think things are going to change constantly over the summer, any travel anywhere is still going to be stressful.
