Help engine problem

You really do need to read what has been said carefully. The 2010/2011 problem was accepted by VW, who published a TPI. In fact I believe you posted pages of the TPI on the Forum.
Subsequent problems are, according to some , related to self destruction of the EGR oil cooler in some vehicles. As not all are affected no one has yet come up with a hypothesis as to why only some EGRs are affected and not all if the EGR is the root cause.
You are at it again. I know there are 2 problems, but you always rubbish the latter, even going as far as denying the link between smoking and lung cancer when I drew that analogy with the failing egrs and 180s dying.
I know the rope you are using as a tightrope, but your dancing gives false reassurance to those trying to weigh up the issue for themselves.

If you wish to quote what others say then please at least read what they say rather than put your own slant on it.
Nowhere have I said smoking does not cause cancer. That is your, and others, false interpretation of my statement and the facts as presented by the Mayo Clinic. Just as you have failed to provide evidence of why the EGR should breakdown on some vehicles and not others.
Banging on about something doesn't make it correct without evidence. It just shows a complete and utter lack of understanding. Continue as you are, with your buddies, and I'll continue calling out your biased, untruthful statements for what they are.

i have same problem in 61 180 cali. its drinking lots of engine oil 1 litter/500 miles. Vw dealer recommended replace new engine. dealer also mention lots of 11-12 model having this problem and its start because of EGR. i changed my EGR 3 years ago but now oil problem comes.

Suggestion : VW known this problem as per my understanding after talking with my dealer. i would suggesting if many peoples have same problem then we should take legal action over VW?

Hello all; here a message from the Netherlands. Our T5.1 2010 CFCA engine has been repaired bij a specialist - please check (use Google translate..) https://techservicecenter.nl/olieverbruik-volkswagen-tdi-biturbo-t5-t6/

We have the California 5.1 from 2015, and my CFCA has been fixed in 2018 on 166.000 kms. No issues on oil usage anymore since repair. No warranty from PON.nl in NL possible on CFCA issues....

Not according to VW, get them (Vw) to put it in writing and go back to the Warranty Co.

presumably there is no exclusion in your policy that they could use to wriggle out of a claim. I.e. they specifically exclude the 180 bi turbo engine from having and engine replacement?
if not, you have a good case to take the warranty company to small claims court.
How did you pay for your warranty?

Its a disgrace on all acc

In view of the protracted legal process and costs involved, unknown costs at initiation, I doubt that this route would be viable or produce a result for many years. VW seem to have a very adept legal team to stall any legal process.

I can only hope my engine will not be one of the afflicted ones. Let's also hope that my 12 month or 12 k oil changing will have a beneficial effect.

From what I've read here I have seen no definitive answer to the reason / cause of the sudden failure?
I've also followed the 12 month oil & filter change routine.
VW at 24 months and local garage at intervening 12 months.
I was always surprised how quickly the oil went black afterwards.
I did the last oil change myself and had a slow drain (over lunch) and got more sludge out than expected with 5 oil changes in 22K miles.
After my oil change drain the oil remained relatively clear for about 1,000 miles.
My suspicion/theory is that the present day method of oil removal by a suction pipe inserted into the dipstick hole leaves the potential for any contamination inside the sump mixing with the new oil.

I understand your train of thought, but a running engine should hold any deposits in suspension for removal by the filter?

That then begs the question as to why engines fail due to oil contamination?

Related to the overall number of vehicles, it's a small problem. Would it be possible to find a "No result, no fee" legal eagle to have a go, possibly as a class action?
I'm invested in this as I have a 66k mile 180 biturbo which had the EGR changed to type D prior to my purchase.
It's not using oil between changes, but is not covering a high enough mileage to know what might really be going on.

The only possible chance of winning a legal action against VW is if it was a danger to life. It’s not, just a sad sorry state of affairs. And leaving customers many thousands £ out of pocket.

I have exactly the same issue. I have a 2014 California SE TDi 4 that I bought just over 12 months ago with 37,000 on the clock. I have done around 10,000 miles since and am constantly have to put oil in it. I took it to VW Birmingham who recommended an oil consumption test .. they drain all the oil out, weigh oil going back in, fit new filter, I drive 600 miles, take the vehicle back, they drain oil out again, weigh it and calculate how much has been used. Outcome = 'yes it's using too much oil' there is no evidence of any leakage and plenty of people have followed me on journeys and confirmed I'm not emitting any smoke from burning oil. VW recommendation .. needs a new engine + 47,000 miles!!!

I do have a warranty in place .. not a VW warranty, but warranty company are saying this is a know VW fault and I have to take it up with them?
Hi jaxdee hope you don't mind me asking but did you buy your van from a couple in Southampton area reg OY14UYR. Just have a feeling it may be our old van, possible not but would be interesting if it is, I think the people who we sold it to got it wrapped a light blue colour and I did see it for sale on the classified ads on here.
Many thanks

In NL the PON company is responsible for warranty, and they did not accept this claim. My Cali was imported from Germany on 140K kms; so also with this mileage no chance. It was mentioned however, that IF they had claimed it before move to NL- in Germany this claim would have been accepted by VW.. Anyway - in my case also 2 turbo's needed cleaning from oil leakages; and more major repair, so I considered this an acceptable cost allowing me to keep the Cali for the next 10 yrs.. ;). Btw - I never checked the EGR version.. will do soon ;)
For me it's closed and I am happy not have to worry on oil anymore. I just followed the TSC advise and replace oil + filter every 15K kms in stead of 30K kms as schedule gives.. On 14K kms it uses now 0.75 ltrs.

Our 2014 Cali is drinking oil. Drove back from France and had to fill it 4 times. No leak, no smoke and no idea why. Does anyone know either a garage near Nottingham who would have a proper look at it (the one we tried didn’t want to start taking the engine apart) or how much a new engine would be. Ta
You don’t say who did the oil change?

An expert mechanic or a VW dealer!?

You don’t need to be either, just competent to do an oil change.
It was more the ever increasing belief that VW mechanics aren’t competent.

Would like to know who did the oil change. Did a dealer fail to do yet another basic task.

@Tigergauss

any update on your original post / problem ?

a response with an update may help others, was it a simple fix or is there a wider problem ?

Looks like we’ll never find out who did the oil change . . .
