Rubber wedge between dash & windshield

just purchased the Brandrup internal windscreen cover and its a really baggy fit from roof / top of windscreen to bottom , there is a rubber wedge down there which pulls out , could this be the cause and whats it for ?

I'm guessing you're not the first owner of the van? That's an aftermarket rubber thingy to stop you losing things down the front of the dash. Its useful but not essential so you can remove it if you want.
