As we haven't been able to use the van since we got it in March, we thought that we would have a "night away" on the drive last night. The roof has been fine until now and raised ok yesterday. Today, I can't get it to respond when I need to lower it.

The display on the new style control panel is showing "intermediate position" although the roof raised normally yesterday and appears to be in fully open position. I can toggle between the open and closed positions on the menu but pressing the control knob now has no effect. The ignition is on. Pressing the knob does work in other control panel functions.

Normally, before any roof operation, a message appears asking to turn the ignition on if it wasn't already and this is not happening which makes me think that we have a software rather than electrical problem.

Interestingly, the display was asking me to switch the ignition on before starting the heater last night - which didn't seem right.

In circumstances such as these with the T6 I would have done a control panel reset at this point but I can't find instructions on how to do this on a T6.1 in the manual or elsewhere.

I have done a "restore factory settings" but all that this appears to do is reset the language to German and doesn't seem to effect a "reboot".

Any ideas? I am loathe to do a manual lowering operation.

Have you tried running the engine?

I have the wiring diagram for the 6.1 and I’ll see what fuse is on the ignition side if the control panel .

Thanks Loz. Yes tried running the engine. I guess that there should be the equivalent of the control panel reset and diagnostics functions that were on the T6 although as far as I remember, none of that was documented in the manual.

If someone finds out, or if someone knows it, feel free to let us all know. Might com in handy.

The Control panel on the 6.1 now talks to a new special vehicle control unit that is supplied by 4 fuses. You could remove all 4 fuses and see if that power cycles the unit.

Is it just the roof not responding or the whole Control Panel?
I'm not familiar with the 6.1 but is there a Reset function in the Menu selection? Although that may not work with the roof up.
You could phone VW Assistance.

Hi - the roof not responding. Also no power in the roof led lights . Can scroll through the panel etc - but it says in “intermediate position “

Try with engine running. If no luck VW Assistance.

As WelshGas says call VW Assistance. You'll get through to AA but ask for them to send a VW specialist.

Good luck

Hi Andrew

Nothing other than what is in these two threads, I'm afraid. The plan was going to be to get Roadside Assistance out to disconnect all three batteries to effect a reboot, as it appears that it is not possible to reset the control panel in a T6.1. However the problem spontaneously resolved just as they arrived. It hasn't occurred since.

Interesting that you mention no power in the LED roof lights. I didn't notice whether that was the case with mine and I suppose may help diagnosis.

I have since had the van to the dealer who, not surprisingly, could not find anything amiss. They did liaise with VW support but couldn't tell me whether it was a known problem. If you do get Roadside Assistance out, it would be worth asking them to do a VCDS download. They pulled an error code from our van which is referred to in the other thread.

Sounds like this is the fourth presentation of this same problem in a T6.1 that we know about. We are bothered that it might happen to us again in some remote spot in future. When you do get it fixed, it would be be really useful to report it through the dealer network as VW do need to have awareness and produce an urgent fix.

Hi folks - thanks kindly for the help and all the advice. Regrettably I’ve had to leave it at campsite with the roof up. I tried all options but no chance unfortunately.
I tried the roadside assist as well as a couple of dealerships in UK that were open. Bit of an unusual situ for us, as I am Gibraltar based- van is Gib reg. so the roadside assist was putting me through to a Spanish based op and all they wanted to do was tow it ( with the roof up ) as far as I could understand. Had a bit of a rush on to get back as I am nightshift tonight. Will let you know how it goes. - Hopefully I can get the ball rolling with the dealership on Monday.
Thanks again kindly for the prompt help and advice.
Cheers

So a wee update from before......

The salesman we were dealing with came by to look and see if he could do anything after a few days. ( I couldn’t attend due to being on shift).
Anyway- the roof closed without incident.
We’ve been away a few times since and it’s been absolutely fine.
How strange.
The issue with the roof lights that I originally thought may be related, go off when the roof is in the “intermediate position”.

Just had a little wobble on my T6.1. The roof was going up for about two seconds and then stopped. "Intermediate roof position" came on. It would not go up but thankfully came down without issue. It then went back up again perfectly. All these reports is not looking good for the T6.1. Hopefully a software update can rid it after the inevitable recall.

just wanted to say that we had the exact same problem with the roof of our t6.1 (this was the second time, first time we called the VW emergency number since we where still in germany and neer a town, second time, in the middle of norway with nothing around and totally panicking. Luckily, I found this forum) and i did the thing you said. Pull out fuse 5-8. the camper unit crashed, rebooted and everything worked perfectly fine again. Thak you so much <3

I was speaking to sales dept at Liverpool yesterday about any cals coming into stock. He mentioned they have had a few 6.1 with electrical issues however VW have identified and recalling. Maybe worth a call.

good to know vw is on it somehow.

We also realized that our roof wont realign itself at all (and never did). Apparently it should do that after 5 hours? so that it gets liftet up again to be in one straight line again.

looks like our control unit is crashing exactly after these 5 hours. So i could guess the auto lifting causing a crash on the whole unit. Did anyone else observed that behavior?

@Der_Kevin , on a T5 this is 10-12h after the last time the contact was turned off.

Is the 5h something VW told you , been changed on the T6?

Yeah, its a info from the garage. They said it checks if it needs to be lifted up after 5 hours and if so it checks it again every 2.5h

but no guarantee that that’s correct. We told them yesterday that the roof got stuck a second time within a week and the reply was „its normal that the roof sinks from time to time“

I'm waiting for my 6.1 and want to be prepared just in case I get this problem. On the picture and Loz's diagram it's not clear which are fuses 5-8. Is this obvious when you're actually looking at the fuse board? If it's not, could you possibly annotate the picture please? Thanks.
