Wider wheels on Cali

Nice drive
Wheels that big a diameter with low profile to keep gearing correct wouldn't be my choice, had rims buckled by pot holes in the past and that was a 50 profile.

Anyhow really interested in your suspension choice and any facts on that would be interesting. That particular one and air being my possible options.

Thanks mate. So you'd gain 2.5 inches on the
Wheel width and a further 21mm on the ET. Maybe too much. But at least I know now and could measure it to the arch. Many thx. May be the 45 ET is enough.
No It's half of 2.5 plus ET.

Be careful with too wide a rim as after spending out all that dough you could damage the rims by having too narrow a tyre to give any protection.

An example of a 235 width on an 8" rim. Reason I don't favour Diamond Cut wheels, need profession repair.

It's not half of the ET, it's half of the rim width delta.

Rim width increased, in your comparison, from 7 to 9.5 inches. You added 2.5' to the outer rim edge forgetting that the measurement is taken from the rim centre so it's only half of the 2.5'.

Thanks again. Maybe better with 18 x 8 with ET 35 then. Judging from all the info above info as the ET will push it out anyway. I have another question.
How come on performance alloys web site you can order 255/45 or 235/50. For the same 18" wheel.

Price difference mainly.
Gearing would be similar whichever tyre you used. Second figure is the sidewall height calculation. 255/45 is 45 % of 255=114.75mm. 235/50 is 117.5mm.
If you go from 235/55 17" wheels to the 255/45 18" option then gearing/speedo would be only 0.7% different.
235/50 18" would be 0.4% different.
255 would fill the arches and protect the rims better.

Because many different tyres will fit several different rims.
There will be an optimum rim width for a given tyre size.

The tyre will just spread out more on a wider rim, i.e. The sidewall will be slightly more rounded.

Think of the total length of a tyre section.

255/45 means the width is 255mm. 45% of 255 is the height of the sidewall. 114.75mm
So two sidewall (inner and outer) equals 114.75x2 + 255 width gives a total length of section of 484.5.

This has to be accommodated over a rim width so a narrow rim will give a higher more bulbous section where as a wider rim will give the opposite.

As stated, the key to optimum performance (apart from sticking with OE) is to match the tyre to the rim.

It's pointless me stating from experience these sorts of aspect ratios will do nothing for comfort because as we've established,

Carlos Fandango's first law of big wheels states 'Bling beat brains'.

Oh and make sure the 'bling' will fit in the spare wheel cradle, because you'll be buying 5 won't you.......?

Lol. Carlos would be proud. So if we can order 18" wheels from VW on a new build with 255/45 tyres - surely this means that VW would deem the Toluca wheels as a safe - comfortable ride ????

If you're paying then, sure, whatever.
