As the 'Last Leg' (CH4) pointed out last night, the coach company's name is Horeseman...as in 'of the apocalypse'...!

I hope not, but the guy in the front seat could suggest otherwise.

Apparently the drivers were OK as the Returnees were more than 2m away, sitting from the back forwards to midway. The escort was suited up as he/she might have been required to attend to one of them.

More information in the National Geographic - specifically about airline travel with an infected person but I guess it is similar to coach travel.

Does nothing to detract from a fine photo for a tabloid newspaper reproduced by @larrylamb

Apparently (per BBC this morning) the drivers have been sent on 10 days home leave as an additional precaution.

I worked on the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone for a short time in 2014. The UKG paid to upgrade us to business class on the flight home, on the basis of achieving some physical separation between us in the cabin. Given we'd been working/living together for several weeks in SL, it seemed an odd measure, although we didn't complain! :Grin

What you don't know is that due to the number of infected people, a large number of patients who have been infected with the virus cannot be diagnosed and treated effectively in a timely manner, and many people have not been treated until they die. Therefore, for the citizens of our country, they must return to the country as soon as possible so that they can be effectively protected or better treated.

My understanding from what I have read many get the virus and can have almost no symptoms, 3 - 4 percent die.

Oh dear......... BBC just posted this.....

Patients at the city's County Oak medical centre have been advised to contact the NHS 111 phone service if they have concerns.

Huh, flying to Chamonix for a few days of skiing on wednesday. Its only a few hours drive from where Italy have locked down cities. Go or not?

It looks very likely that we will all be affected sooner or later. At the rate it seems to be spreading development of a vaccine will come too late.
I could be wrong, but somehow I don’t think so.

So, my advice - Go.

Unless your health is compromised it is a no brainer go.

The number of new cases seems to be dropping.

I think that the spread of the virus is under control.

Go.

To put it in to context,
In the US So far, 16,000 people have died and 280,000 people have been hospitalized during the 2019-2020 flu season, so WTF.

There were passengers on The Titanic who said ‘No’ to the dessert trolley. Right now, I’d go. 100%.

Having said that, I’d probably avoid any apres joints that were particularly sweaty & crowded.

The fact it’s breaking out in Italy so rapidly is pretty scary - Is it beyond containment now? I wonder.

I’m due in the Alps at Easter and will take each day as it comes, with a ‘glass half full’ attitude..... and a cupboard full of dry goods. Just in case. And wine, obviously.

Yes but that is the US - craziest and most expensive healthcare system you could possibly conceive!

You'll be 3 hours drive away. In the uk you are 2 hours flight away from Italy.
Just to put it into perspective.

2% death rate from Corona, 0.2 from flue, that Mexican beer is deadly.

The mortality rate of an open epidemic depends of how it is calculated:

If you calculate it by deaths / cases you get about 2%.

However, if you calculate it by deaths / (recovered + deaths) you get closer to 9%.

Neither method is particularly reliable.

A more reliable method would be:
Case Fatality Rate = deaths at day x / cases at day (x-t)
(where t = average time period from case confirmation to death)

By this measure we get a fatality rate of ~5.7%.

However, this too is likely to by inaccurate as severe cases of the virus are far more likely to be recorded as confirmed cases and also far more likely to result in death than minor cases.

It sems to stabilize in Italy.
Re usa, one patient who travelled from china came back and felt sick. Requested a covid test and had to pay 3270$ for the test. In that world most wont seek medical care at all for flu issues.

So just how does this named virus differ from other new flu viruses that come along each year? symptoms are a cough which can lead to a more serious lung issues, generally in older more vulnerable population. new flu viruses tend to remain anonymous and don't get all this attention, are lumped together and we are told, thousands die in this country each year. so far I have seen not anything in all the coverage which explains why this virus is so special and different. what have I missed?

We are off to NZ at the weekend, flights to Dubai, Singapore, Sydney then onto Christchurch, then same stops on the way back.

My concern is Singapore, major hub lots of people pass through. In Singapore for 2 days so will probably be surrounded by people wearing masks.

If anyone on our flights or at our hotels happens to come down with either a common cold and a temperature or the virus, it can then affect others indirectly.

Just read that an hotel in Tenerife (1000 guests) is now in lockdown after Italian is found to have the virus. Also another story of air cabin crew with the virus just emerged, who have they helped / served on the aircraft?

I don't think it's that life threatening at the minute (number of deaths compared to infected people) could be a different story if it mutates.

Where was the Tenerife story Cloud Dodger?

H10 Costa Adeje Palace in Adeje. Do a google *news* search for Coronavirus Tenerife.

If the news reports are true, this is the damaging side effect of the virus.

So, you got to this hotel yesterday for a few weeks of sun and relaxation and now potentially the hotel is in lockdown. If they follow the same procedure as the cruise ships, you could be confined to your room for 2 weeks quarantine, even if you don't have the virus..
