Levelling chocks

We are also on Cali number 2 since 2012 have never had or used levelling blocks. Have used some very unlevel pitches without issue. You just need to decide do you want blood running to your head or feet at might.

You suss me every time Karlos. I mean the back (not the whole van). I like to keep things that I want to keep dry on top of the parcel shelf and anything long, or that could get wet/muddy under it. I’m quite often pushing in each wedge between the stuff under the shelf and the underside of the shelf itself. And that’s me travelling light.

Fiamma for us, came in a sturdy bag that keeps your Cali clean and they fit nicely into the gap between the kitchen and the seat.

Not used often but when there needed they are great for a fab nights sleep. We also have a folding stool as an extra step which we used all the time but especially useful when on levelling ramps.

If you’re up on chocks/levellers at the sliding door side, forget and step out backwards you can get a right shock. Our little dog hates jumping down too, especially if it’s on gravel hardstanding. We’re both a little older and our knees are a bit dodgy. I think I need to remember our folding step. Another case Karlos of “more is more”

If you have an iPhone. You have a spirit level in your pocket. Go to the ‘measure’ app. It works in landscape with the phone side on. Or lay the phone flat and you get level in all directions.

We mainly use the sliding door as a guide. If that sits stationary half way closed then you’re good front to back. Left to right there’s more tolerance, level ish is ok.

I worked that bit out! But we just move the van slightly until perfectly level. Drives the Mrs nuts! Which is why I do it.

We do a lot of festivals and stopovers in all sorts of places. We’re often somewhere where you could drive and reposition all day and not get level. Levellers save all that hassle and are a quick fix.

Also if you want your top up when it’s blowing a hooley you may only be able to pitch one way.

In our van my hubby’s behind the wheel and I do the spirit level, set up the chocks and shout the orders (much the same as everything else in our 43 years together).

I use two blocks of wood left by my builders...12" x 3" x 1.5". Compact dimensions, and works for me.

Thanks, Mike. Looks promising. We want them in the space next to the drawer, to have them easiliy at hand. Storing in the back is clumsy, especially with the bikes loaded.
How much air is left in the space, would the higher Milenco leveler of 20 CM fit? There are some nasty protrusions on the right wall of the drawer...

I’ve got the Cali empty at the moment as going to use it next week to collect a sofa. When I stick them back in I’ll have a measure.

In addition I keep two sets of walking poles and a long breaking bar on top.

A minute ago I went into the Cali to measure, and there's definitely no room broader than plm. 18 CM, maybe 19 if I remove the three protruding bolts at the right side of the drawer (I think they are screwed in).

No need to take further measures, Mike.

Hi Marc they’re the ‘Triple 2’ and no they don’t fit in that gap. They’re a little wide. We have had to use the top setting a few times though. There are other Brandrup ones that look interesting too and have two parts for each side. Might be worth a look?

they‘re ‘triple 2’ and I don’t think they fit there but I haven’t tried as that’s where we keep children’s drawing stuff!
there’s another type that might be worth trying that look interesting by Brandrup that come in two parts so prob take up less space. Here’s a pic

All Cali's come with a level guide/mesure .
Pour some water in the sink ....
I use the sliding door to check if we are parked up having the front a bit higher than the rear for good night sleeping.
Placing a (transparant) bottle water on the kitchentop is also a good indicator.

On-topic : we carry level chocks since day one and use them frequent.
That is we do use free aires , small campsites frequent and there not all pitches are perfect flat.
If you tend to vistit large 4* campsites your pitch will be level to start with.

All iPhones have a built-in level. It used to be part of the Compass app but now it’s under Measure. Just place it on a flat surface and it shows how many degrees out you are. You‘ll still need ramps though to get the van level though!

Off topic sorry, but what do you need to remove from a Cali to get a sofa in?

If the van ain't level all of the oil in the frying pan runs
to one side, not ideal when frying eggs in the morning.

I have the yellow fiamma ones and they fit in the tailgate
with the chairs.

Have found them handy on the odd occasion to make things comfortable on an awkward spot, so they've earned their space in the van.



(Also on one occasion used as 'peace of mind' wheel chocks when we overnighted on a slight slope that ran down towards a cliff edge!)

Don’t think that would work for us as the gradients we drive on to are variable. Sometimes one wheel may only be up by a couple of centimetres whilst another is at 10-15cm. We seem to use some very wonky places, recently in a farmers field, in the Shropshire hills at a festival.

Always had them and even had to use them on club hardstandings, I am sometimes surprised at how far I need to drive up the ramps to get level when the pitch looks relatively level. Truma have an App which includes a level just open the app and put your phone on a flat surface. Other than that get a little £2 level on eBay

Does anyone have any advice on the best levelling chocks for a California Ocean? Is there any difference in the products available?

The one time you need them you have't got them, so I always carry them, in the space next to the under seat drawer, dead space otherwise. I have the stepped ones but used to have the wedge ones. Used a couple of times.

Difference between stepped and wedge is the handbrake. Having driven on to the ramp so you are perfectly level via spirit/water bottle/marble/eye you then want to release the handbrake so you can swivel the driver's seat ... and roll back off the wedge. So, either don't turn the seat or use stepped ramps or, most of the time, don't bother. Or take another knock out drop from the wine supplies and it won't seem important.
